Chapter 43: Painful memories
I gestured for Cyra to follow me and we flew to where I had stashed my bags beneath the tree. With the moon out, our energy was restored to its full strength.
I landed and pulled my bags out from beneath the bush.
"Thank you for whatever you did back there," I said, turning to Cyra. "I didn't think I'd be able to do it. How did you do that?" I passed one of the bags to Cyra to carry.
"You mean the energy transfer?" she asked. "That was nothing. You were the one who saved me. I owe you my life."
"Energy transfer?" I queried.
"As a healer, I can shift my moon energy into other people. It's what helps us to heal. Although if you shift too much energy into a non-Lunair, it could cause a lot of damage. For Lunairs, it enhances our power. It was the only way I could think of to extend your moon energy for long enough to keep the earthquake going."
"I didn't know that was possible," I said. I paused. "But then I guess I've missed a lot." I realised there was so much I didn't know; about Lunairs, our abilities, even our planet. I had been gone for seven years, and even when I was there, I had only been young. I realised just how much I hadn't been told.
Cyra must have noticed my change in mood. She put an arm around my shoulder and pulled me close.
"It doesn't matter," she said. "You're here now. And look what you've accomplished on your own. Look at what we accomplished together. We're free now, and we're together. We can go home. You can come home, Selene."
I smiled, leaning my head against her shoulder. "I've missed you so much."
"I've missed you too," she replied, pulling away slightly. She lifted my second bag off the ground, and spread her wings. "Let's go home."
She lifted off the ground, and I followed, spreading my wings.
By the time the bewildered Elvirans came out of the damaged house, we were only small dots in the sky.

I found out that Cyra had flown to Earth in a shuttle, like the one we had first escaped in. She had landed it in a remote location before coming to find me. From her time on Earth, before she had been rescued and taken back to Elvira, she had learnt enough about humans and Earth customs to be able to dress and act like one, even if she did not speak English. On her way to me, she had been intercepted by the Elvirans and taken to the house. She had put the co-ordinates for the shuttle in the orb that I had found. It turned out the orb was some sort of GPS device. She had dropped it outside the house after she had sent me the message while trying to escape from them. She had hoped that, because I was waiting for her to arrive, I would pick it up, and I had.
The orb had split open in the earthquake, and I had thought it was broken, but Cyra said that they had inner compartments that were designed to do that, which is why the locket had fallen out.
Thinking about the locket, I had asked Cyra about it. She wouldn't tell me much of what had happened at the house, but she said that she had found it in an interrogation room of sorts. She didn't have any idea why it would have been there, but she had picked it up, recognising it as mine. She had put it in the orb, before she had tried to escape.
Cyra used the orb to direct us to the co-ordinates of the shuttle. We flew until morning. As the sun started to peak over the trees, Cyra gestured for us to fly down. I followed her down between the trees and we landed in a clearing of sorts.
