Chapter 24: The Moon Room
A few nights later I had another dream and it was different again...
I followed Cyra through the forest. She kept turning her head to check we weren't being followed. We weren't supposed to have left the rebel base but Cyra said there was something that she needed to show me, something that would answer all my questions.
At the facility, a Lunair named Orana had spoken to me. She had told me that I was someone called the Millennium Lunair, and that they had been waiting for my arrival. She said that I was special and that I had been gifted with power that I would one day use to free Elvira from the clutches of the Zorkan. I had been seven. I hadn't quite understood everything. I hadn't really thought about it.
Two years later, after we had escaped from the facility, I remembered my encounter with Orana and had asked Cyra about it. Cyra had insisted she show me something. And so I followed her into the forest. We had to sneak out of the rebel base to go there. Everyone was on high alert. The Zorkan had sent his men out looking for us.
We had relocated to a new base but now nobody was allowed to leave. The atmosphere around the base was tense. Anyone could change sides at any time, spilling our secrets to the Zorkan for money or the promise of power.
Sneaking out was risky but Cyra assured me that we would be fine.
A small building appeared in front of us. Plants had grown over and around it, hiding it from view. I hadn't seen it until we were right at the door. Anyone going through the forest would pass their gaze over it, righting it off as an abandoned run-down hut. It didn't look like anyone had set a foot in it for generations. Cyra moved the vines that were covering the entrance and pushed the door open. It creaked on old hinges, opening reluctantly.
"What is this place?" I asked, keeping my voice quiet. Something about the old building seemed secretive.
Cyra didn't reply. She went inside, gesturing for me to follow her. She closed the door behind us.
Moonlight flooded into the room through a panel in the ceiling, casting a ghostly white glow against everything. The room we had entered into was dull. There were a few broken shelves against the wall and an old table sat in the middle, four chairs spread around it. It looked like the place would crumble if you breathed too heavily.
"How is this place meant to solve anything? It's a wreck," I said, looking at Cyra.
"Don't let first impressions fool you," she replied. She moved over to a wall that had a dusty fraying tapestry hanging over it. She lifted the corner, revealing another doorway. Cyra pushed the door open and moved into the next room.
As I stepped into the next room, my breath was taken away.
A giant moon crystal sat in the middle of the room on a pedestal. It was larger than I'd ever seen them before. The only ones I had seen were small, small enough to sew into bracelets and fit inside lockets.
A ray of moonlight came through a hole in the roof and hit the crystal. The light filled the crystal and shined out from every edge and face. It was so bright I could hardly look at it, yet I couldn't take my eyes off of it. The moonlight that shone from it was so rich and seemed to fill the deepest parts of my body. It was like the ordinary moonlight had been magnified by a hundred, or a thousand, or a hundred-thousand. I wanted to stay here forever.
"It's intoxicating, isn't it?" Cyra spoke, interrupting my thoughts, and pulling my mind away from the crystal.
I nodded, finding no words to say.
