Chapter 3

Ainsley

I’m at the island helping Payton with her spelling when Shawn runs in and tells us that we are meeting with Nathan in the den. It’s only eight thirty and I have already bathed and laid Sophie down to bed. Getting up, I follow everyone into the den, but remain standing while everyone sits on the large sectional. Nathan walks in the kitchen before coming into the den. He stands tall before everyone and looks around to make sure everyone is here before looking at me.

“I decided that since I was supposed to come back the day after tomorrow that we will go through with the plan of having Ainsley stay until then.” He pauses when the younger kids cheers, but quickly silence them before looking at me and continues, “However if I don’t like your performance, I will not hire you and you have to leave.”

I nod my head to him before he walks to me and hands me my resume and leaves. Looking at everyone else, they are all smiling and I can’t help to smile too. I just hope that I can convince Nathan to let me stay, at least for the kids. Walking back into the kitchen I ask Jonah the kids schedule and how things work around the house.

The kids are to be in by bed before ten and they usually wake up at six thirty. School starts at eight and lets out at three where they take the bus to and from school. The twins have their own car and they play football so they don’t come home until after four unless it’s Friday where they have a game. When it comes to breakfast, the kids are on their own and eat cereal. Sophie stays home and usually someone watches her, but since I’m here I will watch her.

When they leave, Payton sits at the island and we go back to studying. We would study for twenty minutes then take a break to talk with the boys who have migrated from the den. Suddenly thunder begins booming outside and I hear Sophie crying loudly. Getting up, I go to her room and Nathan is walking into her room with Jonah following. I watch from the door as they try to calm her down and my heart breaks for the child. Nathan is holding her and cuddling her into him, but nothing he does seem to work. So badly I want to calm her with my magic, but she needs to learn to not fear this and I will make it worse in the long run.

“Soph, it’s ok. Thunder doesn’t hurt people.” Nathan says, but then it lighting and a loud clap of thunder booms making her shriek louder.

Stepping up, I ask, “Do you mind if I try something?”

They both look at me, but Nathan signals for me to go on. I walk to the big window in her room and pull the pink blackout curtains open. I then get some pillows and prop them up so it’s comfortable. I get a blanket from the crib before getting Sophie from Nathan and lay her down on the pillows so faces the window. Lying beside her, I ask for someone to turn off the lights, but leave the door open so the hall light to shine in.

Sophie is still crying, but I tuck her into my side and say, “Sophie, its ok honey. Look out the window; someone told me that all thunder is, is God playing bowling with the angels and every time it lighting it means that he is winning.”

She peeks out from my side when she hears the thunder and only flinches when she sees the lighting.

“Looks like he made another strike, he is kicking some serious butt up there. Look he did it again!” I cheered out and Sophie is now sitting up looking out the window.
