Chapter 27

Ainsley

I can hear talking all around me, but I can’t seem to get out of this darkness. No matter how hard I try, I can’t wake up. At first I was scared, but now I am really getting annoyed. I know I’m not dead so what gives. No matter how loud I scream, it’s like no one can hear me.

Nathan, I know hasn’t left my side and I can feel his touch on my face and hear his sweet words. I feel so helpless and I just want to see him.

Whatever this place is, it feels hopeless and it leads to nowhere. Everything is in grey tones, ranging from light grey to dark. There is nothing here and no one; I feel like I am slowly losing my mind. What has happen to me?

Nathan

It’s been two weeks since Ainsley stopped Donovan and hasn’t woken up. I saw her tumble to the ground and I didn’t care if I was stark naked as I tried to wake her. She still had the pedant that binded Donovan and it took everything in me not to take it and smash it, but Eleanor got ahold of it.

After we got Ainsley home, she still wouldn’t wake up. At first, Eleanor said it could be from using so much power from fighting. But now Eleanor has been doing nonstop research to figure out why she isn’t waking up.

The council had left a few days ago and have taken the pendant trapping Donovan. They are putting it somewhere where no one will find it and I hope he suffers; I know I am.

Everyone has been telling me I should go and get some rest, but all my wolf and I want is to see her beautiful eyes, to see her smile, to hear her laugh; I just want to see her awake and happy. Every second that passes my heart breaks. She shouldn’t be like this.

“Hello Alpha Nathan, has anything changed?” Eleanor asks as she walks in.

I shake my head, afraid that I will break apart if I speak.

Eleanor nods her head in understanding and walks forward to stand by Ainsley. She looks down lovingly at her and I know that she is blaming herself. Many are at this point.

“I think I have figure out what is going on.” She says and I look intently at her before she continues, “I believe Ainsley is in the in-between. A place where the dead can’t go, but the living can’t reach. Now why she is there exactly, I don’t know.”

“What do we do to get her back?” I ask hopeful.

“There is a spell that could work, but I need your help. Since you and Ainsley are mates, your souls are intertwined together.” She says.

Standing, I reply, “Tell me what I have to do.”

“Alright first I need you to hold her hand and clear all thoughts that doesn’t relate to Ainsley.” Eleanor says as she takes out three white candles from a bag I didn’t notice she was carrying.

She places one on the side table, one on the end of the bed, and the last one by where I sat. After she lights them all, she takes out a white cloth and ties it around Ainsley’s and mine hand.

“Now picture her in your mind and when it feels right to you, call to her.” She says as she takes out sage and begins burning it while chanting softly.

I focus on Ainsley’s face and I think about the night in Mobile when I marked her. That was the happiest moment in my life.

“Ainsley, I need you to wake up. I need you and I don’t know what to do without you here. Never in my life have I ever imagined being this happy with anyone, but you came out of nowhere and I can’t imagine my life without you in it. You are the bravest, strongest, most loving person I have ever met. I love you; I love being around you. Please wake up Ainsley; I need you.” I say and I feel tears pool up in my eyes.

I lay a kiss on her forehead and I want to scream out when nothing happens. Leaning my head against her, I let out a tired sigh, but then I feel a delicate brush of fingertips against my cheek. Leaning back, I open my eyes to find Ainsley staring back at me.

Ainsley

I am sitting down on the ground with my head buried in my knees. Listening to silence that surrounds me and I feel empty. Suddenly I hear something and I look around, but everything is the same. Standing I walk around, but I can’t hear anything. Then I hear it again and I know its Nathan talking to me.

I smile as I listen to him tell me how much he needs and loves me. How he can’t imagine living without me there.

“Nathan, don’t give up on me.” I whisper as I begin seeing a light.

It keeps on growing as he speaks to me and everything around me fades away. Smiling I begin walking towards the light, knowing where it will take me. Closing my eyes, I feel my skin warm and I feel my right hand tied to something warm.

I open my eyes to find Nathan leaning his forehead against mine with his eyes closed. He is quiet as I brush my free hand against his cheek. Startled he leans back before opening his eyes and he smile broadly at me.

“Ainsley, oh God, I thought you would never wake up.” He croaks out.

“I’ll leave you two alone and tell everyone what is going on.” Eleanor interrupts as she quickly unties our hands and blows out the candles before leaving.

Nathan strokes my hair back as I ask, “How long was I out?”

“Two very long weeks; I was so scared, I didn’t know what to do.” He answers and his voice brakes.

I grab his hand and say, “I could hear you the whole time, but I didn’t know how to get to you. You brought me back Nathan; you saved me.”

“I just didn’t want to lose you again.” He whispers as he leans down and kiss me.

When we break apart, I answer, “You never lost me in the first place; just a little lost.”

“I love you Ainsley.” He says as he wraps me in his arms.

Smiling into his chest, I reply, “I love you too.”
