I sat in the warm sand looking out at the water. It was still morning and not a lot of people were swimming yet. The water was calm and peacful, it hipnotized me. I sat and stared at the sight.
"Hey Matt," Randy said, taking a seat next to me. He stretched out in the sand and made his self comfortable. "What's up?"
"Thinking," I replied after a moment. And I was thinking. About everything. The party. Hannah. Liam. The girl's conversation. Liam and I's conversation. So many things were running through my mind. I pushed the thoughts away in the deep corners of my mind, they would come back later but for now I wanted to talk to Randy.
"Thinking of what?"
"Stuff," I replied with a shrug. I turned to face him, my eyes squinting against the morning sun. "Just random stuff I guess."
He shrugged too. "Fair enough." We turned away from each other and stared back at the calm water in front of us. It was a beautiful morning. The sun had just risen, but the sky was still full of colors. Brilliant pinks and blues and oranges mixed together in the sky. Not a cloud in sight.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Randy turned back and looked at me with a lopsided grin. "AJ asked me out on a date," he said.
I smiled at him. "Awesome man!" He laughed and nodded, and then it hit me. AJ and Hannah's conversation had nothing to do with me. It was AJ talking, not Hannah. AJ liked Randy. She asked him out.
In a way, I was sad, yet I was also relieved. At least now I didn't have to worry about Liam. But still, I really do like Hannah. I know I didn't know her that well yet, but still I never really felt that way about any other girl before. Sure, there's been girlfriends I thought I was in love with, and there have been a few girls I've liked, but none like Hannah.
Gawd, I sound like a love crazed teenage girl. I should really stop watching those girly TV shows, they're screwing up my manly mind.
"Matt, I'm so happy. I really like AJ. And a girl that's willing to make the first move? Forget about it! That's the type I'm into, Matty Boy, a headstrong chick."
I paid little attention to Randy's babbling about AJ. I was too busy moping to myself that Hannah really wasn't interested in me.
After a few more minutes of kind of listening to Randy and kind of being tuned out, I sighed and got up. The beach no longer seemed peacful. People had started to show up and ruin my perfect view. "I'm happy for you Ran, I'm gonna go inside now."
"Oh... uh ok Matt. I'll be in in a few."
I nodded to show I heard him and walked back towards the house. I kept my head down as I walked through the door, so it was no surprise when I crashed into someone on the way in. I looked up and past the person I knocked into. I didn't care at the moment.
"Sorry," I said, my voice coming out sounding monotone-like.
"Watch where you're going Matty Boy," Liam said, chuckling. He stopped laughing when he noticed my expression of dis-amusement. "Hey, what's wrong?"
I masked my emotions with my imfamous poker face. "Nothing. Just hungry."
"Oh. Well grab a bite and then come outside. The guys and I are gonna go jump off the pier. See if the girls want to come too would you?"
"K," I said and walked past him. Liam walked outside and towards the beach. I walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge to grab the blueberry bagels and cream cheese.
"Whatcha whipping up?" Paul asked.
"A bagel."
"Oh. Well eat quick, we're gonna go-"
