History passes by quickly. We had to take notes on a documentary.
At the end of class, I think about what Zane said about Lilo. I feel a scowl form on my face.
Why should I stay away? Why can't I fight?
Thatcher catches my expression as I leave and pulls me aside.
"Aria, is something wrong?"
I breathe heavily. "No, everything's just peachy."
"Aria." Thatcher leans down and looks me in the eye.
I cross my arms. "It's this girl."
"If you tell me, I can fail her."
I look up at him.
"Joking, joking. Go on."
"So anyway, she's always glaring at me and apparently she's a lot of trouble.
So a friend of mine.... Well, yeah he's a friend....."
Thatcher smirks. I blush.
"Anyway, he told me to stay away from her. So I was just kinda put off, you know? I mean, I know he was probably worried or something, but still."
"Aria, if that girl fights you or bothers you, you should fight back. Show her that you are not to be messed with. After all, you are a grim reaper, a measly mortal shouldn't push you around."
I release a breath I didn't know I was holding. I hug Thatcher and kiss my godfather on the cheek.
"Thanks for understanding."
He tousles my hair. "Understanding is part of being a godfather. Now hurry and get to class.""Did you get number five?," Rocky asks Cace.
"Yeah, it was pretty easy."
"Yeah, well, most of us don't have an IQ of over 90."
Zane snorts. "Speak for yourself."
"Hey!"
Gianna and I giggle.
We focus back onto our workbooks and work out the speed of different vehicles. We all finish our sector early, and the substitute isn't paying attention, so Rocky pulls out his phone ("Probably to text Roxanne," Gianna snickers) and Zane and Cace turn to talk to us.
"So you guys wanna hang it after school today? I know a good ice cream place,"
Cace says.
Zane and I glance at each other.
"Can't," I say," Got some work to finish."
"Yeah, same here, I've got practice,"
Zane says.
"Oh ok." Cace looks down, disappointed. Then, he looks up at Gianna.
"Do you wanna hang out? I could pick you up after school.... If it's alright."
Gianna's cheeks pink. "Yeah, it's fine. I'd love to come!"
Cace blushes and smiles. "Cool."
I smirk at Gianna and shoot her a thumbs up. She grins. After science, Gianna walks next to me.
"I know what you guys did," she whispers.
"What?"
"You and Zane."
"What did we do?"
"You skipped out on the ice cream for me, didn't you?" She grins at me.
"Yeah..... Busted," I say, shrugging.
She hugs me. "You guys are awesome!"
I hug her back, feeling a little guilty.
Better than her knowing the truth, right?
We walk into Art and see that walls are covered in pieces of splatter paint art.
Mrs. Nayes stands at the front, holding a paint brush and a palette. Some paint is smeared on her face and smock.
She grins at us. "Class, today, you're going to explore abstract. You are going to use different techniques to create your own unique pieces!"
She gathers us all around a table and shows us how to splatter the paint, how to dribble it, and how to spread it out by blowing on it. She hands us each a paint palette and three different paint brushes.
I feel a smile break onto my face as I splatter paint all over my paper.
By the end of class, there's no one in class who doesn't have paint smeared on their face. We're all grinning as we finish up our pieces.
We put them away on racks in the back, and rinse off our hands. The bell rings as we're putting out stuff away.
As I'm walking out, someone grabs my hand.
"Hey, Aria. Can I talk to you real quick?"
I turn and Zane looks at me seriously.
"Ok, sure. We're going to the same place anyway."
He takes deep breath and looks me in the eye.
"Aria, you're strong. But, you can't take the world by yourself."
I huff.
"What is your problem?"
I look at him, my brow furrowed.
He pulls at his hair with his other hand.
"My problem is I'm worried. You're powerful, no doubt about it, but you're headstrong. I saw your face in History. I know what you were thinking about. I don't want you getting hurt."
I look at him, my gaze softening.
"Why do you care anyway," I ask softly.
He smiles. "I think we both know the answer to that."
He leads me to his car, still holding my hand. I hop in and look in the back.
"Awwww, no Viky?"
"Why?" Zane grins. "Afraid to spend some time alone with me?"
I turn red and hit his arm.
"Ow!" Zane rubs his arm. "Damn, was that necessary?"
I flip my hair. "If I did it, it was."
Zane laughs and starts up the car.
