I hardly sleep that night. I keep going over Chris' conversation with the other guy.
Who is he? I think for the millionth time.
My alarm goes off and I sigh and pull myself out of bed.
I quickly get ready, kiss Dad goodbye and get into the car.

I don't pay attention in any of my classes. I'm still thinking about yesterday. My hands hurt from the burns and how tightly I held my scythe. I wince every time I use them.
I don't see Chris in any of my classes.
I don't see Gianna either, which is weird.
I text her after Art, when I finally start paying attention to what's going on.
Sick she texts.
Ah.
I walk down the stairs when I hear someone call me.
"Aria!"
I turn and see Thatcher jogging up to me.
He pants and leans down. "I..... Have something for you."
He holds out a piece of paper. I look at it, confused.
"It's a documentary. You're scheduled for a reaping today."
"Really?"
Thatcher nods.
For a moment, I'm suspicious.
If I had a reaping, Dad or Riel would've told me.
I mentally shake my head.
This is Thatcher. As in your Godfather. Why would he trick me?
I take the piece of paper which has an address scrawled on it.
"This is where your target lives. She's in the third room to the left."
I look at the address, squinting.
It looks familiar.
"What's her name?"
Thatcher beckons me closer and whispers the name in my ear.
I suck in a breath. "No..... No."
Thatcher shakes his head. "It's her time and it's your duty."
"But......"
He grips my shoulder. "It's your duty. Every second you don't, her soul will die a little."
I back away. "But she-"
"Aria, it's your duty. And that's that."
Thatcher looks at me, his eyes dark and serious.
I nod slowly and grip the paper. "Ok...... Ok."
Thatcher nods once. He turns and walks away.
I race down the stairs and out the door.
I pull out my phone and text Mom as I run.
Going to friend's house
