"Good. Now what do you do?"
"I take the souls of the deceased."
"What else can you do?"
"I can take souls, summon weapons, and teleport to a place of death."
Jameson's voice and face contorts, his features transform into those of a pudgy, middle-aged man.
"You are a monster! You are the daughter of monsters! You are a devil child!" He spits at me.
I calm down, remembering that this is training, this is all part of training.
"I am simply doing my job sir."
"Your mother consorted with demons! That is why you're here!"
"Sir, my mother is none of your concern nor is she part of this conversation."
Jameson smiles at me. "Good job, Aria! You did not lose control! Much better than last time! Next time, I'll make it a little harder, ok?"
"Yes, sir," I say relieved. I passed! I won't have this test again until next month.
I gather up my things and walk down the stairs and to the front door.
Ugh... Nobody here.
I pull out my phone and call my dad. He picks up on the first ring.
"Hey, Dad. I'm finished."
"Almost there."
"Kay."
A Silver Lexus pulls up to where I'm standing about 5 minutes later.
I get into the back seat since my brother's already sitting up front.
"You bum. You know that's my spot." I poke Riel in the arm.
"What can I say? I've got my sister's safety at heart. Wouldn't want the airbag hitting you in the face, now would I?" He says, grinning at me.
"Hey! I'm not that short!" I grin back.
"Yeah, right,"he snorts.
"Dad! Do you hear him?"
Dad just chuckles. "Now don't bring me into this."
His dark hair gleams in the moonlight as we drive back home, his hazel eyes focused on the road.
"You look like you just woke up,"I say to my brother. His chestnut hair is messed up and there are faint bags under his gray eyes.
"And you look like you just earned yourself a special trip to noogie-ville."
I roll my eyes and turn to my dad.
"So how was the meeting?"
"Same as always. Rigley made a fool of himself."
"You should've seen em, he was drunk and he was staggering all over the place and then he ended up making out with Roster's vase!", Riel laughs.
"For real?".
"Yep."
"Dang."
"Dad, didn't you say that Roster was talking about recruiting some younger reapers for R.I.P?"
"Yeah, I don't know if he's still considering it. Personally, I like that you can't join until you're a legal adult; makes it safer that way."
"Well, Riel is 20 but he acts like a 5 year old, so does he really count?"
"Hey! I'm right here y'know!"
"Yes, unfortunately."
"You little-".
"Riel....", my father said in his watch-your-mouth voice.
We make small talk until we get home.
Once we get there, Riel and I both go to our rooms to finish our homework.
Riel's actually in college, but you never would have guessed it.
I open up my math textbook and focus on square footages.
Uhhh.... I can't deal with this.
I quickly finish up my work, then go downstairs for dinner.
As I plop onto my chair, I hear Riel talking to Dad.
"But really though? Reapers in Prosperity? Who came up with that anyway? Why didn't you guys just keep it as Rest In Peace?"
"Roster wanted to make it unique. Besides the rest of the group all voted on it," Dad replies.
"Thatcher didn't show up?" I ask.
"Yeah, he did, but he was late. Like 30 minutes late."
"Huh. He said he might not be able to make it".
"When'd he say that?"
"History."
"Wait, he's your teacher?"
"Yeah.....".
"I'm totally getting the dirt on you," Riel grins mischievously.
"Don't you dare!" I say, wagging my spoon at him.
"HEHEHEHE!" Riel laughs.
"Are you trying to be evil?"
"Hey! Let a guy try,ok?"
We both start giggling. Soon everyone at the table is giggling and laughing.
