Cace drops me and Zane off at my house. He drives off to drop off Gianna.
"What are we gonna tell my parents?"
Zane shrugs. "What happened, I guess."
I walk up the stairs and unlock the door.
I brace myself.
"ARIA!!!!!!"
Mom and Riel rush forward, pulling me inside, and pushing me down unto the couch. Dad is laid out next to me, glaring.
Mom glares at me too. "Do you have any idea how late it is? We've been texting and calling you non-stop!"
Riel starts next. "What the hell happened to you? You're cut up and sweaty. And why the hell didn't you answer?!"
I take a breath. "Ok, first of all, my phone was stolen. Second of all, I'm all cut up cuz I was in a fight."
Dad speaks up. "I thought we agreed on no more fights."
"This one.... Couldn't really be helped. They swung first."
Mom raises an eyebrow. "Swung?"
"Reapers."
Riel raises his eyebrows. "Who was it?"
"This guy named Chris."
"What's his last name?" Dad asks.
"Uh......" I glance at Zane.
"Porter, I think."
Riel looks at Dad. "Wasn't Porter a rouge? Is this his son or something?"
Dad sighs. "Probably."
"What else happened?"
I recount what happened, Zane filling in parts I missed.
After we're done, the room is silent.
Zane cups his chin in his hand, thinking. "Now that I think about it...... That other guy, the one Chris was talking to, he was the traitor. He has to be! Why else would Chris have said all that?"
Riel nods. "Yeah, yeah! That makes sense! We're looking for evidence at the facility, maybe we can find something proving Chris guilty. It's not like you guys recorded him, right?"
Zane grins. "Actually......"
He pulls out his phone from his pocket and clicks something.
Chris's voice fills the room.
Riel jumps up. "Awwww yeah!"
Dad grins up. "Good work."
Riel claps Zane on the back. "Yeah man."
Zane blushes. "No big deal really."
Riel and I gawk at him. "What are you talking about? That was pure genius!"
Zane beams. "Think so?"
Riel snorts. "You must be crazy."
I clear my throat. "I hate to say it, but Riel's right."
"Hey!"
"She's right," Dad says.
"I'm not that stupid."
I scoff. "You sure?"
Zane laughs as Riel sticks his tongue out.
After we're done arguing, Zane pipes up.
"I should, uh, get going."
He waves at me and nods at Riel. He walks out the door.
"That," Mom points at the door," is one smart boy." She winks at me. "Don't lose him."
