I got to school the next day, and that skip guy who sat next to me walked up to me.
"Hey." He said a little nervously.
"Hi."
"So, what do you like to do?"
"Read, how about you?"
"Umm I can't believe I'm doing this." He mumbled. "I would like to go on a date with you."
This is really weird, no one ever talks to me, let alone ask me out. I don't know why they are but I'm going to find out. I thought for a minute.
"Ok, when?"
"Are you free tonight?"
"Yeah, I guess."
After that, we went to our separate classes, and that meant I was stuck in geometry. I struggled through that class and all my other morning classes until it was study hall.
I noticed James was there, and I wanted to talk to him. Before it was mostly because he was always alone and I know what it's like to be alone, but now I think we have more in common, and we would be good friends. If only he would let me.
I stood up to go talk to him, when another group had just walked over to him. I tried to hear what they were saying.
"Hey what are you reading?" A tall guy with dark hair asked.
"It's a book about-"
"Lame!" The annoying guy hollered.
I looked back at the teacher and she wasn't doing anything, and then I looked back at them.
"You're such a dork." The dark haired guys blonde friend said.
It started getting worse from there, so I stepped in.
"Just leave him alone." I said as I walked up to the group.
"Oh, dork here has a girlfriend." the dark haired guy said.
"Yeah you gonna let your girlfriend fight for you?"
"I'm not his girlfriend, I'm not even his friend." I said the last part with a disappointed tone, even though I tried not to.
"So why are you defending this little punk?"
"Because I want to be his friend, he just doesn't want me to be his friend. So just stop picking on him.
"Well what are you going to do about it?" He asked, as he went back to harassing James."where do you buy your clothes, some store for nerds?"
"Look, just leave him alone." I said and put my hand on his shoulder to get him to stop, and he turned around and punched me in the face.
The next thing I knew I woke up in the nurses office with a bloody nose. I sat up, and saw in the corner of the room was James. He was just sitting in a chair, waiting for me to wake up.
"How long was I out?" I asked.
"Not too long, just about ten minutes."
After a second my nose started bleeding again, because it must have stopped during those ten minutes. I grabbed some tissues and looked at him.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Doing what?"
"Being nice to me and stuff."
"Because I want to be your friend."
"Well don't, in the end-" then he trailed off. He pointed to my book. "You like to read right?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Well, let's just say that not everyone gets our happy ending."
I was confused about what he meant by happy ending. What exactly did he mean. We aren't living a fairytale, things rarely have the happy endings they deserve.
"Well there are downsides to having friends, but you don't need to have a happy ending, this is real life."
"You don't get it, but one day you will." He said as he started to walk out the door.
"What do you mean? Understand what?" I shouted out as he left. I got a few extra tissues as I left I case my nose would bleed a lot more, and went to my last class of the day.
It was hard to pay attention in my class, partially because today was confusing and I just want to get home, plus I was dizzy and light headed from the punch to the face. Although I did hear that the two guys got suspended. I waited anxiously as the last few seconds of school went by so I could go home and rest. I didn't want to think about anything that happened today anymore.
I got home and immediately my mother asked me about the "fight" I was in, apparently the school called her and that's what they said. I explained to her that it wasn't a fight but other than that I really didn't care, and I just went up to my room and laid down until I eventually fell asleep.
