It had been a week since the incident when I got punched and went to the nurses office. Those boys that punched me and were harassing James came back to school today. I was fine with them coming back until about eleven o' clock.
I was in the library, and I was sitting at the table next to James' table. He lets me sit closer to him now, so that's a start. I was sitting and reading when those boys walked in. I tried to ignore them when they walked up to James.
"Hey Jack." One of them said as they walked up to him.
"My name is James."
"Whatever."
"Just leave me alone." James said.
"What, you're not going to have your girlfriend fight for you?"
"She's not my girlfriend."
I know he didn't want me too, but I couldn't resist it and I had to go help him.
"Hey, you guys really need to leave him alone."
"Are you gonna stop us?" He said as he tried to hit me, but I ducked out of the way and he missed.
"No she isn't." James said as he walked in between us.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
"Just stop trying to help me, ok?"
I tried to hide the hurt look on my face but I'm sure it showed.
He stopped talking me for a second and I think he noticed the hurt in my eyes. "And you two." He said as he turned around and faced them. "Just leave us alone. You wouldn't want to get suspended again would you?" He started walking away and one of the guys grabbed his shirt, turned him around and went to punch him, but I jumped in front of him and he punched me.
The next thing I remember was being in the nurses office I woke up and I heard the nurse talking to James.
"You need to be more careful."
"I know, but-"
"No, just avoid getting into more fights. You were really lucky this girl was there."
"Yeah yeah I got it."
"Ok. I'll be back in a few more minutes."
The nurse walked out and James turned around to see me there.
"How much of that did you hear?"
"Not much-"
"The truth?"
"Just about all of it."
"Great."
"What did she mean by lucky, and being careful?"
"That's all you heard?"
"Yeah, what did she mean?"
"You don't need to know." He said as he started walking out the door.
I slowly got up and followed him. I was curious what was happening that I didn't know, but he obviously didn't want me to know. Eventually I caught up to him and walked next to him. We walked in silence for a short time.
"Please don't ask me what she was talking about."
"I won't." he stopped and had a shocked look on his face as I said that.
"You won't?"
"No, if you don't want me to know then I won't ask."
"Really? Wow. Thanks for that."
After that we walked to class together and sat down in our seats. We were starting to make some progress towards being friends. The day was long, but eventually it was over and I went home. I didn't say anything to anyone and I just went up to my room and laid on my bed until I eventually just went to bed.
