Chapter 16:

Brie’s POV

Driving through Seoul as fast as I could, not the least bit concerned about breaking the law, I looked back at Jong, who was holding up Jess’s head.

“How is she?”  He looked down at her, with an expression of hurt upon his face.

“You can tell she’s in pain.”

“Well, she won’t be soon. We’re almost there.”

Pulling into the emergency drive, I stopped the car with a resounding screech, leapt out, and threw open the back door. I carefully slid my hand under her neck, her soft caramel hair draping over my fingers. Holding her back and legs, Jong slowly and carefully slid to the edge of the seat. I then put my arm under her legs, causing her to wrench her face in agony.

I quickly but gently walked through the sliding doors, to be met with a hospital bed. I slowly laid her down, her body limp and frail. They then started rolling her away, examining her wounds.  I soon followed them. I held onto her hand...her soft, fragile hand.  Soon I got tugged away by a nurse, who told me that I was going into the restricted area.  Restricted area, my butt.  But soon, a security guard stood threateningly front of me, which rapidly changed my mind about the whole restricted area business. I reluctantly walked back to the waiting room, hoping for an answer soon.

2 Hours Later...

When are these people gonna tell me something? I’ve been waiting here for two hours!

“Dude! Stop pacing! You’re starting to wear a hole in the carpet,”  commented Key, once he heard what happened.  He was so angry you could see smoke coming out of his ears.

“When are they going to tell me something? When?!?”

“Don’t worry, hyung. They’ll tell us soon,” said Tae, trying to comforting me. Unfortunately, I was too worried to be comforted right now.

“Does...anyone want chicken?” asked Lee awkwardly.  I think he was attempting to change the subject.

“How can you think of chicken at a time like this?!” snapped Key, causing everybody in the waiting room to look at us for a good 10 seconds like we were aliens covered in slime. Suddenly, a nurse walked in the room, instantly securing my attention.

“Anyone here with Jessica Coben?” she asked.  I dashed up to her, immediately followed by my fellow hyungs.  Shocked by the crowd that had just formed, her eyes widened as we got closer.

“Well! Um...please, follow me.”

We followed her out of the waiting area, and into a elevator. She explained that Jess had a few broken ribs, a sprained ankle, a nasty concussion, and a bruised cheek. She also explained that she was asleep, but would probably wake up in a few hours, or tomorrow, since it was 6:00 at night. That reminded me about Jess’s mom.

“Min Su, call Jess’s mom and tell her to come to the hospital.”

"Arrasso,” she said, raking the room with her eyes for a telephone.  By the time we all filed in Jess's room and caught sight of her, my heart was breaking.  Her formerly flawless cheek had already started to bruise, and she had several IV’s in her arm - her soft, delicate arm. Ah! Brie...Come on dude. Get a grip here. Even if you love her, she wouldn’t love you back. Key and Tae walked over to the bed as Tae started to cry softly, Key comforting him.

“I am so sorry, Brie...” said Jong solemnly.

“Yeah, me too.” I sat in the chair next to the bed, and held her hand.  Her hands were so soft, yet powerful, like the time she slapped me. I chuckled at this memory, remembering her livid face. Geez, Brie, you act like she’s gonna die or something, she’s fine. I know Jess...she won’t give up so easily. Soon a nurse walked in to check on her, checking the various machines and tubes going in and out of Jess’s fragile body.

“Tsk, poor girl.  Are you family?” she asked.

“No, we’re just good friends,” I replied, wishing in my heart we were more than that.

“Ah! I see. Who’s the oldest here?”

Since Lee went to get food, I was the oldest one present. Not to mention the most mature.

“I am.”

“May I talk to you outside for a minute?”  I nodded, giving Jess’s hand a light squeeze, then followed the nurse out.

“How is she?” I asked, trying to stamp down my nervousness.

“We haven’t done any x-rays yet, but the doctor suspects a lung has been punctured.  Did you notice her having problems breathing?”  I thought back.  When I carried her, she gasped out of pain, but she seemed to be breathing pretty normally, considering.

“No, none.”

“Well, we might be taking her for x-rays later. I just wanted to let you know about her condition and ask about that issue.”

I bowed slightly as the nurse walked away. Oh, I am going to KILL Da-Hye. I knew she was still crazy about me, but severely hurting one of my friends who just HAPPENS to be a girl is not a way to show it. I turned around to walk back in, only to be met by Key-dongsaeng.

“What’s the scoop?” he asked slowly, probably expecting the worst.

“They have to take some x-rays later; the doctor suspects a punctured lung.”  He gasped and leaned on the wall for support. “Oh my God,” he uttered finally, astonished.

“I know.  But I think she’ll make it.  She’s a strong one, Jess.”

“I hope so,” Key said, shaking his head in wonderment.

She’s got to make it...
