Kevin's finger automatically squeezed the trigger of the red plastic gun gripped in his hand. Several baddies on the screen staggered back as gore sprayed from virtual wounds. However, the action was automatic. Neither his heart nor his mind were truly in it. The normally cathartic release that came from blowing the heads off of zombies was just not keeping his mind off the injured fox.
There was just something off about that fox. Granted, the super healing abilities kind of made that obvious, but still, he couldn't help but feel like there was even more to that fox than he had already seen. There had to be some secret he that had yet to uncover, something so incomprehensible that it could cause his entire worldview, and maybe even reality itself, to shift in a way that would change his life forever.
Or he could just be paranoid. That was also a possibility.
"What the hell man?" a voice shouted in his ear. Kevin turned his head to see a pair of brown eyes staring at him with barely concealed annoyance. "Pay attention. You've nearly had your head bitten off several times the last minute, and I'm not going to save your sorry ass every time something tries to kill you."
Eric Corrompere was Kevin's best friend. They had met each other in elementary school and just sort of clicked. The two had been thick as thieves ever since, or at least they had been until Eric discovered the wonders of women, but that was a story for another time.
Eric had a head of short brown hair and dark eyes. He was very tall for a sophomore, standing nearly a head and a half taller than Kevin, and he was also very lanky. If Kevin was lean, then Eric was a twig, with long arms and legs and large feet. He looked kind of like a monkey.
Both he and Eric were on the high school track and field team. While he preferred short-distance sprints, Eric was a great long-distance runner.
He was also the biggest pervert Kevin had ever, and likely would ever, meet, and he had no compunctions against proclaiming it to the world. There had been many times when Eric had freely told anyone willing listen that he was a proud Super Pervert. He was that kind of person.
Kevin personally thought he was trying to emulate his favorite anime character, Jabidaia, the mentor of Natsumo from Shinobi Natsumo. Since Jabidaia was the biggest pervert in anime history, naturally, Eric followed in the fictional character's footsteps. Of course, all of this was just a theory.
Eric's outgoing and perverse nature was probably the biggest difference between the two of them. Where Kevin was shy and couldn't talk to a girl without passing out, Eric would chase after girls like a dog chasing its tail—only he was ten times more lewd than a dog could ever be.
And much like a dog can never seem to catch its tail, Eric had absolutely no success when it came to picking up girls, probably because no girl would ever date someone so lecherous.
It didn't help his case that he'd been caught trying to peek into the girl's locker room several times since the start of the school year. Kevin was honestly surprised his friend hadn't been expelled for that. Then again, his dad was the principal of their school so...
"Sorry," Kevin sighed, "I guess I just don't feel like playing video games right now."
"Don't tell me you're worrying about that fox?" Eric shook his head. "Honestly, Kevin, you're my best friend and everything, but your obsession with animals is not cool. This is why you can never get Lindsay to go out with you."
Kevin flushed. Lindsay Diane was the girl that he had been crushing on since middle school. They had been friends for a long time—even longer than he'd been friends with Eric—but he had never been able to work up the courage to ask her out.
