Ella opened her eyes slowly. It was just a dream, she said silently to herself. Ella woke up in her room. Her hair was a bush and her pajamas were sweaty.
Mr. Rook knocked on the closed door. "Ella, it's 10:00, Saturday," he said, his voice a bit muffled through the door.
Ella sighed. She liked Saturdays. She didn't have to pretend to be a normal person at school. She didn't need to wake up early. And, on top of everything, the Wolf Pack met every Saturday night by the creek.
Ella rubbed her eyes and got out of bed. She had to dress in her pack uniform, for they were meeting that night. The uniform was a black velvet dress for women and black flats. No jewelry was allowed, for it could be made of silver.
Once done dressing, Ella walked downstairs to eat. Suddenly, she got a call from the family's cordless home phone. Ella noticed her father was upstairs, so she answered on the third ring.
"H-hello?" she asked, not knowing what to say on a phone.
Ella started to regret her decision, but then she heard an answer. "Hi!" said a small voice. She sounded like a small child but, even through the phone, Ella knew who this was.
"Melanie?" she whispered. "Is this Melanie?"
Melanie was a quiet girl at school. She didn't talk in the hall, like Ella. She didn't go on her phone during class, like Ella. She didn't seem to have any friends, though. Even though she had beautiful red hair, no one seemed to notice her. Like Ella, except Ella had brown hair.
Melanie laughed over the phone. "I've seen you around school. Do you want to go to the mall today around noon?"
Ella paused for a bit. Father would NOT like this! she thought. But instead, she smiled. "Meet you at the mall at 12:00."
Melanie said goodbye and hung up. Ella ran up to her room, grabbing all of the money she owned. She snatched a brown leather tote bag from her closet, a gift from Christmas a year or two ago from John. Ella stuffed the money in the bag.
In the middle of cramming money in the bag, Ella felt a plastic tube. She pulled it out. "Light red lipstick!" she squealed to herself quietly. She opened the tube and put it on. It was pretty easy for her. She looked in the bathroom mirror of how she looked. Perfect! she thought, running down the stairs and out the door.
Since Ella was only fourteen and a half, she couldn't drive. Instead, she got her bike and rode. The mall's not that far anyways, she told herself. I think.
