"Ella!" he screamed. His face had turned red in seconds, showing the anger inside.
Ella gasped, not because she had been caught, but because her father sometimes turned into his wolf form when he got very angry. "Father, calm down!" But that didn't help.
"What are you doing?! Who are you?! Danger!!!" he screeched.
Melanie's father came out of the vehicle. "Hello. My name is Mr. Cook. This is my daughter Melanie," he said in a plain tone. "Melanie invited Ella to the mall."
Mr. Rook's head looked like it was about to explode. But instead of exploding, it morphed. Melanie screamed quietly. Mr. Cook stared with no enthusiasm.
In seconds, Mr. Rook was a wolf. But not just a wolf, like on full moons. Because of his strong anger, he was a werewolf. His orange shirt was half ripped. His blue jeans were torn to shreds. He was covered in pieces of fabric. He roared.
Somehow, no one seemed to notice. There was even a truck driving down the street. He waved at us.
Ella tried to calm her father down. "Father, calm! Think calm!" But it didn't help.
Melanie started to cry. "What is going on?" she peeped in a quiet voice. She hugged her father, who was staring into nothing, unexcited.
Mr. Rook in werewolf form then picked up Mr. Cook. He howled in his face. But he then use both hands to smash Mr. Cook into the window of his own car. Glass shards flew everywhere.
Ella grabbed Melanie's arm and took her into her house. Too busy killing Mr. Cook, Mr. Rook didn't notice. "Come on!" Ella whispered. Melanie followed Ella through the hallway and up the stairs. But, when the two were almost in Ella's room, Crimson jumped in front of the two. He growled. Moonlight followed him.
"W-w-who are t-these d-d-dogs?!" she whimpered, making the last of her voice come out in a whisper.
Ella sighed. She whistled sharply and Crimson and Moonlight walked away into Mr. Rook's room. Once in her room with Melanie, she locked the door and put a few things in front. She had to tell Melanie.
"Melanie?" she started, getting her attention. Melanie looked up from looking at a golden necklace on Ella's shelf. "Do you remember reading The Werewolf of Fever Swamp when you were a kid?"
Melanie nodded. "Well," Ella began, taking a deep breath. "I am a werewolf. So is my dad. And John Ethel. And my whole pack."
Melanie stared. "It's kind of obvious," she said, pausing. She pointed out the window. Mr. Rook was changing back into human form. And no one seemed to notice. "Since I just saw your dad as a wolf."
The two laughed for a while. But then Ella stopped. "Are you going to tell anyone?" she asked, looking worried.
Melanie smiled. "Never."
And she almost didn't.
