Ella gasped loudly. She found herself laying in her bed. She heard her father's voice downstairs. He was talking to someone. Ella rubbed her eyes. She stretched her arms above her head and yawned. Ella looked over to her shelf and read her digital clock. 6:05.
Ella dressed for school, a pink shirt with blue jeans. She chose yellow socks and covered them with her favorite sneakers, a navy blue.
She ran downstairs. Mr. Rook was cooking something at the stove. She heard sizzling and realized he was making eggs. I hope they're scrambled! she thought.
Ella ran to her father. "Morning, Father!" she said, hugging him. She noticed he was wearing a brown shirt and special brown jeans-his pack uniform.
"Why are you wearing your uniform?" Ella asked, backing away from the hug. She looked in the pan while waiting for a reply. Yes! she said to herself silently. Scrambled eggs!
"John Ethel and the other adult members of the pack want to have a meeting tonight." There was something in the way he said 'adult,' as if he didn't want me to tag along. He grabbed a plate that he had put next to the stove and filled it with eggs. He then handed it to me.
Ella sighed very quietly to herself. She walked to the table and started to eat.
But, when she was halfway done, Ella asked her father, "Last night I dreamed of this river."
Mr. Rook's eyes widened. "And?" he asked, as if she had left a huge cliffhanger.
Ella continued her story. "John Ethel dove into the river. When he came out, he was covered in blood. The river was full of blood." Ella said "full," in a mysterious voice.
It was very quiet for a moment. You could only hear the birds chirping and cars driving down the street. But otherwise, silence. Nothing.
Mr. Rook sighed. He took his stare to the floor. "John said something about a river. A powerful river," he muttered, starting to look up.
Again, it was quiet. That is, until a loud knock was heard. Mr. Rook shook his head, freeing the stare, and walked over to the entrance way. He placed his hand on the doorknob and twisted. He opened it quickly. He gasped. Ella walked over. She almost fainted.
Mr. Rook took a deep breath in. "Why are you here?" he asked, his voice growling.
