When Featherpaw and Moonpaw had woken up Blizzardpaw and Tigerpaw, they all went to have some fresh kill before saying goodbye to their families for the last time.
Moonpaw was worried about his mother. What if she dies of grief, he thought. He could never forgive himself if something happened to her.
It was as if Tigerpaw had read his mind, because he put down his thrush and looked at Moonpaw thoughtfully, his soft green eyes understanding and kind.
That's Tigerpaw for you, Moonpaw thought. Kind, understanding and just a great littermate overall.
Tigerpaw meowed softly, "Listen, I know you're worried about Mom, but she's got Larkpaw, and the thought that you're out there, making her proud, should be comfort enough. And StarClan will protect her. You know that."
Moonpaw fixed on a forced smile. "Yeah, I guess so." But in reality, Tigerpaw's words did little to soothe his troubling thoughts. He couldn't help feeling like something bad was going to happen in his and his friends' absence.
But before he could worry any longer, Stormstar called for a clan meeting from the top of the gorge.
All cats padded closer to their leader, all with the knowledge that today was the day that he would abandon his clan in favour of a dangerous quest.
"CATS OF SKYCLAN!" he meowed, "Today I will be leaving the gorge, along with Moonpaw, Blizzardpaw, Featherpaw, Tigerpaw and their mentors." He paused, as if thinking carefully what he was going to say next. "I would be dishonest if I told you that this journey wasn't dangerous," he meowed, "and I may not return from it. But I promise you this, warriors: By StarClan, if we should lose any cats on this trip, I shall be the only one to be lost. I bid you farewell, SkyClan."
And with that he jumped off the high ledge he was standing on. Yowls of "Good luck" and "May StarClan light your path" echoed through the Gorge, but in between were yowls of dismay as their leader led Moonpaw, Featherpaw, Blizzardpaw, Tigerpaw and their mentors to the entrance of their home. Before they set out on their journey, Tansypaw and Larkpaw came to say a last goodbye to their littermates and friends.
Moonpaw and Blizzardpaw suppressed amused purrs when Tansypaw quickly licked Tigerpaw on the cheek and whispered something in his ear.
It felt like no more than a heartbeat till the four apprentices were out of the camp and in search of ShadowClan, with nothing but the stars to guide them.
