Moonpaw was standing on a huge piece of rock. The word mountain came up in Moonpaw's mind. Then he saw cats, more cats he had ever seen in his life. A ginger tom, with green eyes, and a white tom with one black paw, were arguing. A plump dappled golden she-cat followed closely behind. Moonpaw saw that there were not only adult cats, but kits, and cats the age of apprentices as well. There were also elders. No matter their age, each cat looked tired, and hungry. Their scents were barely distinguishable, but Moonpaw scented that some cats smelled like water and fish, others of gorse and wind and some of oaks, and squirrels. But there was one scent that stood out above all. Certain cats, mostly with darker pelts, had the tang of pinesap clinging to their ruffled fur.
All of a sudden, the cats vanished. Now Moonpaw was standing by a large lake. The reflections of starlight made the water shimmer. Yet again, Moonpaw saw the ginger tom. He was addressing the large group of cats. Suddenly the tom was beside him, but somehow, he was also still talking in the distance. The tom next to him said, "I remember this day well. The day the Clans had found their new home." Moonpaw was stunned. The Clans? he thought. New home...? The ginger tom continued speaking, "Eventually, RiverClan found a stream to live by, ThunderClan a forest full of oaks, WindClan a wide open moor and ShadowClan a shady pine forest."
"But...I thought the Clans lived in the forest?" Moonpaw asked.
The tom replied,"We used to. But then the Twolegs came with their Tree-eaters, and destroyed the forest. But luckily, StarClan was watching over us, and they sent four cats, one from each Clan, on the first journey. They went to the sun-drown-place, and there they were told to lead their Clan over the mountains to the lake." Then Moonpaw 's mind filled with understanding. The tom was showing him where he must go. The four Clans no longer lived in the forest, so Moonpaw was to journey here. Just then, the ginger tom began to fade away.
"Wait!" yowled Moonpaw, "Who are you?"
The tom smiled, his green eyes glowing with kindness.
"I am Firestar, past leader of ThunderClan."
