Tobias
I wake up alone. No Tris beside me. My stomach drops and I scramble out of bed. Hurriedly, I snatch the gun from under my bed and release the safety catch. I search all the rooms, every single one of them but there's no sign of her or an intruder. I walk to the front door to search around the compound but just as I'm about to open it, Tris sprints in and almost knocks me over. She's gasping for breath, almost hyperventilating.
"What's wrong Tris? What happened? Are you ok?" I bombard her with questions. She just nods and clutches her chest. Tris rests her hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath. I place my hand on her back, guide her over to the couch and sit her down. I walk over to the tap and fill her a glass of water. I hand her the glass, She grabs it and gulps down the clear liquid like her life depends on it. I look at her, confused.
"What happened?" I ask again but slower this time. She's slowly starting to regain a normal breathing pattern. Tris takes a few deep breaths to calm herself.
"Peter." She says, out of breath. "Peter saw me and he-he..."
"He what Tris?!" I almost shout. I see tears start to well up in her eyes and immediately, I feel pang of guilt. "Sorry for raising my voice, I just want to know what happened." She shakes her head slightly and gulps.
"He remembered me." She says almost inaudibly. "But you said you watched him drink the memory serum. I don't understand." She says in a low tone. I lean back in my chair and take deep breaths. Peter drank the memory serum, he doesn't remember anyone but Tris. I watched him drink it, I saw the old Peter drift away and a new, more innocent Peter appear. How is it possible that he doesn't remember anyone but as soon as Tris comes along he remembers?
"Did you talk to him?" I say. She sighs and rubs off the imaginary sweat from palms off on her black jeans. Once a Dauntless, always a Dauntless.
"There wasn't much time to chat whilst he was chasing me down the corridors." She says sarcastically. I smile a little at her joke.
"Why were you out anyway?"
"Caleb had to run a few tests on me, nothing big." She notices the small frown plastered on my face and places one of her small, fragile hands on my shoulder.
"Hey, cheer up. Things are starting to go back to normal." Tris says. I nod even though I know it will never be the same.
"What if it wasn't memory serum. It could've just been water or something." I say. She furrows her eyebrows and bites her lip, a thing she does when she's concentrating.
"It could be possible, did you inculcate Peter?" She asks. Now that I think of it, I think we did. I mean, we must've. There's no other explanation, we inculcated him so that if the memory serum did go off he wouldn't lose his memories. So all this time, he was pretending?
"So does that mean that all this time, he was pretending?" I say, more to myself than Tris. She nods.
"I think so." She gets up. "I'm going to see Caleb and ask him to whip up some truth serum, I've got an idea." I think I know what she's planning to do.
Sorry for the short chapter and not updating on Wednesday. I'll try and update another chapter today to make up for it, hopefully that chapter will be bigger than this one.
