Chapter 13-
When Louis was eighteen, he had a friend who went through something unthinkable. It was life changing for them both and affected them in such a way that neither knew how to take it. That person was named Harry, and that 'something unthinkable' was Luca. But they took it well, and now...they sat with their family in a hospital bed staring down in love at their new son, Oliver. He had Harry's darker hair, dimples, and nose, and Louis' blue eyes, straight wisps of hair and looked so much like Louis. And Louis was in love with his son.
Luca was holding him, with Harry's support, and poking his chubby cheeks. Their parents had left the room a while earlier to let the family be. Louis had his head on Harry's shoulder, not feeling too much pain due to the medication he was on. And it was pretty strong, making him a little drowsy, but still awake enough to be with his family.
"You know, you were like that when you were that tiny when you were born, Luca Lou," Harry explained. "Actually...you were smaller."
She looked up at her father, squinting. "I was?"
Louis nodded. "Yep. You were born a few months early, but very healthy. Which Daddy and I are so thankful for."
She smiled and blinked at her infant brother. "Will he be bigger than me?"
The fathers let out a short laugh and looked at their daughter.
"What do you mean? In height? He could be, if he's like Daddy."
"I no want him to be."
Louis shook his head and brushed Luca's hair out of her eyes. He stifled a yawn and snuggled deeper into Harry's shoulder.
"Tired, Boo?"
Louis nodded and let out a quiet noise.
"Alright. Go to sleep. We'll be right here."
Louis nodded and maneuvered himself down to his pillow. Within minutes, he was asleep.
"Louis, are you coming?"
The boy looked out the window to see Harry in the back garden playing with Luca. He smiled and called out the window.
"Yeah, I just put Ollie down for his nap. I'll be right out."
Louis gave his son a kiss on the forehead and walked downstairs and out into the warm air. Spring had arrived and that meant that Luca's birthday was also fast approaching. He ran out and scooped up Luca, minding the new scar that was on his stomach. Like most, he had to refrain from strenuous activity for a while, and he couldn't pick up Luca and hitch her over his shoulder.
Harry walked over and kissed Louis' lips.
"You're perfect. Did you know that?"
Louis gave Harry a slight smirk. "You've said it once or twice."
Just before Louis could kiss Harry again, a loud crash came from inside the house. Harry took Luca from Louis and he bolted inside and up the stairs, skipping two at a time. The door to Oliver's room wise wide open, and from where he stood, Louis could see a lamp that had been knocked to the floor. He quickly paced into the room, his breath being taken out of him when he saw a figure over Oliver's cot, reaching into it.
"Oi! What the hell are you doing? Stay away from my son-"
The figure turned around, and the dark-haired, pale-skinned man named Matthew Peterson looked at both men and the little girl with wide, panicked eyes.
"I-uh...Louis." The man's breaths were scattered and heavy. "I was just, I-"
Louis pushed him away. "We told you to leave us alone!"
He looked into the cot and saw his son, still and asleep. Reaching a hand down, he realized how cold the boy was. Louis began to panic, and he looked back at Harry.
"He-he's freezing."
Turning back around once again, the cot was empty, and Matty was gone. He looked over at Harry, seeing Luca wasn't there as well. Harry just stood still, and pale, staring blankly at his husband.
"Harry...where did they go?"
No response.
"Harry...where did they go? Harry! Answer me! Where are our children? Where did he take them?"
Louis was beginning to get hysterical and all he could see was sadness in Harry's green eyes. Harry merely blinked before a cloud of smoke began to flow into the room. While the curly-haired boy stood still and seemingly unfazed, tears were running down his cheeks. Louis began to hear a wheezing cough, and it took only seconds for him to realize that they were coming from him. He tried his best to stay on his feet, but his legs began to get wobbly. They went weak and Louis fell to the floor.
"H-Harry..."
Louis woke with a start. The room was dark and quiet. It must have been pretty early. He saw Harry in a chair in the corner of the room with Luca fast asleep on his lap. The pair must have conked out hours ago, seeming that it was probably around five in the morning. Louis saw Oliver in the cot next to the bed and let out a sigh of relief.
"Thank God..."
He reached out and ran a careful finger over Oliver's cheek. He was warm. A healthy warm, as well. Louis couldn't help but pick up the baby and cradle him close to his chest, letting his infant son's nose press into his shoulder. He let out a small noise, one that was so quiet it almost disappeared into the air.
"I'm sorry if Papa woke you up, baby..."
But looking down at his second-born, the child seemed uninterrupted and completely oblivious to his surroundings as he slept. Louis smiled and kissed the upper side of his head, pressing his nose into the soft hairs. He stayed like that, cuddling Oliver close and protectively for a little while.
At about seven-thirty, a nurse came in with a bottle and a smile. She handed it to Louis, gesturing over to Harry and Luca.
"I remember when she was born," the woman said. "She was everyone's favorite and you and Harry were so careful with her it wasn't even funny."
Louis smiled. "Really?"
She nodded, letting out a chuckle. "Really. You held her like she was as fragile as glass, making sure she was never cold and her belly was always full. And now this little guy is the ward's favorite. You and Harry are wonderful parents, Louis. You were blessed with two gifts that are purely yours."
"I like to think of it that way," he whispered, Oliver slowing down on his drinking.
"I'll change him for you, get some sleep."
The nurse took Oliver to the changing table in the corner of the room before putting the boy back in the cot. Louis tucked himself under the covers, thanking the nurse, and faced Ollie. Just as he was falling asleep, he heard a light patter of feet. Luca appeared at the edge of the bed a minute later.
"Papa," she sighed.
Louis smiled sleepily at his daughter and patted the bed for her to come up and lay with him.
"Why are you awake, sweetie?"
She shrugged, getting on the bed with a struggle, Louis helping her up and managing not to strain himself. She crawled over and cuddled into his side.
"Papa..."
"What's up, babe?"
"S'eepy..."
"So sleep. It's still early."
She nodded tiredly and pressed closer into Louis, minding the inscision in his lower stomach. Luca kept one arm tucked around her, and the other one resting on Louis' chest. Louis kept his head back on the pillow, his eyes slowly shutting.
He figured he must have slept for a good hour or two when he awoke again. The little girl was still pressed into his side, part of his shirt curled into her small fist. Louis played with her soft hair, pulling at the tight ringlets. He heard a rustling and saw Harry stirring from where he sat in the corner of the room. The curly-haired father of two looked groggily around the room before seeming to realize where he was. He looked over at the bed and smiled lovingly at Louis and Luca.
"Hey, birthday boy."
Harry smiled and walked over, kissing Louis' head before pressing his nose into his hair.
"Where's my present," he quizzed jokingly with a laugh.
Louis gestured to the cot. "Safe and cozy right there."
Harry turned and picked up his newborn son, giving him a tender kiss on his forehead. The newborn was asleep with his mouth slightly open and fists curled up. One of Oliver's tiny feet was peeking out of the blanket, Harry tapping each of his toes with a wide smile.
He gently climbed onto the bed, holding Ollie close to his chest and kissed Louis' cheek.
"How's my birthday boy?"
Harry shook his head laughing. "I've gotten the best birthday gift ever, my baby boy. But, Baby Bub and Luca Lou are the two best babies in the wold. I couldn't have asked for anything better, no matter what day it is."
Louis smiled before squinting. "Baby Bub?"
Harry smiled, fixing the blanket that was wrapped around Oliver.
"Yeah," he said. "Baby Bub. If Luca's got a nickname, so should Ollie."
"But Ollie is his nickname, isn't it?"
"Yeah but...Baby Bub! It's cute! As I can't call you that, because you're my Boo, Boo."
"I'm you're Boo, Boo?" Louis chuckled. "There better be a comma between those two. I'm not an 'owie' as Luca's called it."
Rolling his eyes, Harry said, "You're my Boo. Forever and ever and ever."
Louis had to admit, no matter the age, Harry always seemed to act and talk like a child from time to time. But not usually the annoying kind, the funny, happy kind. And now that they had two children, and it was especially evident with Luca, it showed even more so. In school, Harry would have an occasional slap fight with Niall, or get told off by Zayn for something and Harry would go beet red, getting his tight smile. Or Liam would try and wrestle with him, only resulting in the younger boy yelling "Uncle" in a squeaky almost girly or suffocating-sounding voice while in a headlock. He'd try and act tough and wave his fists around a bit before just coming out laughing. And with Louis, just like it always seemed to be with them, they always cuddled.
Harry would let Louis lay on top of Harry's chest and sleep, a blanket over them. He'd fall asleep with his arms wrapped tightly around Louis on the couch. Even tiredly cuddle onto Louis' lap if he was beginning to get sleepy during one of their movie nights, just like it was those few years ago. That infamous night.
Louis smiled at Harry and looked at the time. About ten-twenty. Louis shook Luca a bit, kissing her hair. "Baby girl, come on. You have to go get breakfast, and Nanna's gonna be here soon with Nanny."
She stirred and looked tiredly up at Louis.
"Pop-Pop?"
"Grandad, too, babe. But later on."
She sat up and smiled at Harry. "Daddy!"
"Good morning, Luca Lou," he girnned as he kissed her hair.
"Hung'y," she pouted.
Harry let out an "ah-like" noise and stood up, carefully handing the baby to Louis. He walked across the room, grabbing a small container of Cheerios out of the bag that he managed to remember.
"Here, babe." He opened it up and smiled, Luca popping a few into her mouth and feeding one to both her fathers.
"Ollie?"
Louis shook his head. "Ollie can't eat food like we do for a while," he explained, keeping his words simple. "He has no teeth, see?"
Louis stuck his finger between Oliver's lips and pushed the top one up, gliding his finger on the gums.
"See? No teeth."
"Ew..."
Harry laughed loudly pulling Luca onto his lap. "He's your brother! Be nice, babe."
"But yucky!" Luca pointed to the baby's mouth. "Papa touched."
Louis shook his head and leaned back into the pullows as he cradled Oliver into his chest. The infant yawned and put the back of his fist on his cheek as he slowly opened his eyes. Louis swore he heard Harry's breat stop as he watched intently.
"Blue," the younger father awed, swaying closer to his son.
Louis gave the baby a sweet smile as their eyes met for the first time. A pride grew in his stomach that made him happy to have a son who looked like him and had his blue-grey eyes. And a little voice on the back of his head told him that it didn't think Oliver Eliot Styles' eyes would get any different.
Louis didn't know how long it was thathe was staring at his son, hut a familiar voice made him snap out of his very deep trance.
"Ok, so thanks so much guys for not telling us anything."
The three looked up towards the doorway and saw Zayn standing there with his arms crossed over his chest.
"What? You didn't expect all of us to drive back home and see you right after you had a baby?"
"Sorry," Louis mumbled.
"Pe'ie!"
Luca jumped off the bed and raced over to Perrie and hugged her legs.
"That's fine, Luca, don't say hi to the rest of us who have known you since you were born," Niall stated flatly.
She turned and looked at her three uncles. "Hi," she muttered. She turned back to Perrie, playing with her hair and talking with her excitedly.
"So where's the little guy." Liam pocketed his phone and walked over to the bed leaning over to get a glimpse of the baby.
"He looks just like you, Louis," Perrie whispered, picking Luca up. She leaned into Zayn's side, his arm wrapping around her waist and playing with her fingers.
"So this is Oliver," Niall mused. "Just like Luca wanted him to be named."
Louis nodded, turning Oliver around to face the boys. Harry chuckled as the baby let out a sigh before pressing his face back into Louis' chest.
"Luca," Zayn began. "How do you like your baby brother?"
"Cute."
"You like being a big sister?"
She shrugged. "Dunno. Yes?"
"Yea?"
"Yes!"
"And it's your birthday," Niall stated to Harry after a minute. "There goes our dinner plans, I'm guessing?"
Harry shook his head. "I'm sure you guys can smuggle in some takeaway. Are you ok with that, Louis?"
He nodded. "Yeah. It's your birthday." He rubbed Ollie's hand. "Both of yours."
"But I wanna make sure you're ok with it."
"I'm happy if you're happy, ok? Shut up and choose."
So, after a long discussion about what they would be getting as a "hospital appropriate" takeaway dinner, the six of them decided on Chinese. At around four, Zayn and Perrie returned with the food, not exactly sneaking past the nurses.
"We told them we were coming to this room and they told us to go ahead," Perrie shrugged. She took Luca into her lap, making a little plate for her.
Louis just finished feeding Oliver and had gotten him to sleep. After a few hours, everyone left, leaving the family be. Their parents came in and they chatted for a while. For Louis, he knew Harry had a good birthday, and he was happy for him, and their new son.
"May I come in?"
Dr. Burton poked her head around the door. Louis nodded pushing a sleeping Luca's hair back.
"She looks more exhausted than you," she chuckled.
Harry shook his head. "Not at all. She'll be up at five."
Dr. Burton chuckled and smiled at Oliver in the cot. "Just came to check your inscision."
Louis nodded and lay back against the pillows as Dr. Burton check around. After a moment, she finished and stood, writing something on the clipboard.
"All seems in order. I'd say you can go home in two days, and then back next week for a check."
"You're not gonna keep me for as long as you did last time?"
"Well last time because of what happened that brought you into early labor," Louis cringed at the thought. "you had to stay for at least a week. But, since this was a safer labor than last, you'll be safe to go.
"And unlike Luca, Oliver can go home with you that same day."
Louis seemed to smile even wider than before, hugging Harry.
"Now, I know it won't be fun, but we're going to begin to ween you off of the medication tomorrow, Louis. You'll be getting another perscription for when you leave, which you'll probably take once a day. And other than that, everything should be in order."
Louis and Harry thanked her before she left, and they kissed for a long minute. Their baby boy would be home in a few days and then they'd be a family at home and forever. Louis just wanted those days to pass quick so he could take his babies home.
