I walk to the kitchen and my jaw drops.
My mom has bruises all over her arms and a few on her face. One eye looks like it's swelling and will be a lovely shade of purple tomorrow."Mom, what happened?" I ask dumbfounded. "I just ran into a few things when I was at work." she mutters, not looking at me. "Mom, you were with Dan the whole day. Tell me what's going on."
"Honey. Dan didn't do this to me. Care to explain why there is a white van in my driveway?" she asks, trying to change the subject. "Mom, you can tell me what's going on. I want to come home to a healthy mom, not a hurt one." I mean every single thing I said. I know that my mom annoys me but at the end of the day, I know that she's there for me and I couldn't ask for something better.
She looks down, beginning to cry. I wrap her into a big hug and wait for her to talk. She leans into me and starts to really cry. After a few minutes, she starts to sniffle and I ask her what's wrong again. "Dan got mad at me because I was late picking him up and decided to teach me a lesson. He hit me and kept me in his house so no one would notice anything."
"Oh mom," I hug her hard, wishing I could take the pain from her. "What did you do when you left?"
"I drove straight home. I can't be seen like this, people will talk." she answers. "You know you can't see him anymore right? He was never good for you." I tell her, recalling all the moments I said he seemed off. "I know. I really liked him too.." she sniffles loudly again.
I reach over and grab some tissues. "Blow your nose and go lay down. I'll make you some chamomile tea. I'll make the dinner as well." I unhook myself from her when she gives my hand a squeeze.
"Thank you baby, you're such a good daughter. I'm sorry I told you that you were just jealous I had a boyfriend. I don't know what got into me. I'll work on that." she smiles, eyes still red and glassy. lGo lay down, I'l be there in a sec." I smile back at her and she walks into her bedroom.
"Oh yeah, you never answered my question. Why is there a van in the driveway?"
"Um...would you believe me if I said One Direction was upstairs?"
"I'd call you crazy to your face." she replies.
"Well..." I mumbled, puzzled on how I was going to tell her. "Indie, I know they're here. I got a call from Paul. Was it? Yeah it was Paul. Paul said that they were here and asked if it was ok. Paul seems like a nice guy."
"So is it?" hoping she'd say yes. "Yes it's fine. I don't want to catch you doing anything inappropriate alright?" she replies, leaving room for no argument. Not that'd I'd argue.
"No mom, nothing will happen. Why would they want to do something with me anyways?"
"Goodnight sweetheart." she yells as she walks to her room on the other side of the house. Phew. What a night.
