The time when I was supposed to meet Jared loomed closer. I filled my morning and afternoon doing nonsense things. I cleaned excessively, tended the garden out back, even baked a few pastries. My nervous doing had set my mother to take notice. After I had went back over sweeping the kitchen she made me go sit down and relax giving me a cup of tea.
"I don't know whats got you in such a tissy. But relax my sweet child everything has a way of working out in the end."
If only she knew I thought staring at the four walls of the lounge room. The plush chair I sat in was so big it almost engulfed me whole. A crackling fire set into the front wall gave warmth to the room. It was the only light I had.
The flickering of the fire against the dark room cast shadows on the walls. When I was younger I used to love making hand shadows on the walls. Cole and I had made a competition out of it. Who could make the best shapes. Those were the simpler days. Compared to now when the whole pack expected me their future alpha to find a mate.
Outside the three bay windows night was almost upon us. Stars dotted the dark velvet sky twinkling in there existence. Sometimes I would gaze for hours at the stars willing them to show me something, anything to give me insight of the future. But they stood silent as stars. Never changing staying consistent constellations.
I let my mind wander to a old child's tale told to every soon to be shifter. The tale of the Chosen white wolf. I remembered sitting in my mothers lap as she recited the tale to me while brushing through my hair. I slipped into the memory gladly.
"Long before our world came to be. Our ancestor shifters were free to do what they wanted without fear of being hunted down by the humans. Instead of packs we were split into different clans. The clans had to put aside their differences to band together and fight a rogue threat. He was pure evil ripping fear into the hearts of even the bravest shifters. His name was Varlic he wanted to lead all the clans. To form them into one. He sought out to destroy and kill everyone who got in his way and anyone who challenged him. Everything was in chaos. That was until a prophecy came from an old seer. "
This part my mother paused thinking carefully on what to say. before resuming her tale.
"A girl will be born on the month of November on the full moon. She could hold the power to destroy all evil and restore balance. Between the clans. Her fur will be of the white of fallen snow. This child shall undo all evil or be the harbinger of death."
"And so that scared Varlic off into hiding. Leaving the clans to reform and nurture what had been greedily taken from them. Ever since then He has left them in peace. But some say he still prowls the deepest parts of the woods waiting for his moment to strike again."
I remember looking up at my mom, then after she finished. My huge grey eyes met her brown ones.
"What if he comes back? He could take us apart!" I started to get anxious anxiety filling up my 8 year old body. My mother shook her head wrapping her arms around mine.
"Remember my sweet Lainey, we will have something far more powerful than Valric. We have family, each other, our pack. Even if we were apart we would always be with you." She hugged me tighter squeezing me to her. "We will always find our way back to each other." I sniffed pulling away from her kissing her cheek goodnight. She gave me one more kiss before blowing out the light.
Ever since then the prophecy has stuck inside my mind. There was something about it that struck a long chord inside me. But a few choice words stuck out like a sore thumb: Moon, Balance, Snow, Death. How could one person possibly be the answer to all of that?.
