My legs had grown stiff from staying on the ground all night. I was grateful kian hadn't came to me. I couldn't Handle seeing him right now. The events of yesterday still fresh in my mind.

As I backtracked from where I ran from, I managed to find my bag. I didn't bother stopping to rest. I ate while I trekked north. Today the air had a bitter chill to it. The farther north I went the colder It got. The ruby glowed brighter now more than ever.

I hugged my arms around me trying to savor heat. I shivered from the cold breeze that whipped around the trees. The stiffness in my legs had worked themselves out by mid-afternoon. I had slept a great deal last night trying to forget about Kian. The darkness had wrapped me in its embrace shielding from the horrors of the world beyond. I gladly accepted its embrace reveling in it.

A burning against my chest, made me pause. I grabbed the ruby, it burned against my hand. In an instant I removed it from my neck. I dangled it in front of me not daring to touch the ruby.  This could only mean one thing. I was nearing the portal between the worlds. I kept my eyes peeled for any sign of something out of the ordinary.

A faint shimmer in the corner of my eye. I turned towards it,  two massive oaks stood, branches entwining at the top. Between the trunks the shimmer was there. The ruby glowed impossibly bright.

This was it.

The portal.

I made a step towards the oaks, when I noticed the two wolves standing guard before it. I halted assessing the threat. The wolves were armed with silver armor that hugged there torso. These weren't regular wolves. They had to be fae warriors. I took a deep breath steadying myself.

"I need to get through." They stared at me in response not moving an inch from their post. I took the remaining few steps till I was right in front of the gap between the two trees. That's when the two wolves sprang into action. They came and stood in front of the shimmering gap. Snarling, bristling they held rank. It was enough to make me take a few steps back.

I tried a feeble attempt digging deep down trying to find my wolf. But once again I came up empty handed. I growled my frustration.  Both of them were black as night. No doubt great for night patrolling.

"What do you want?" I asked aloud. This was wasting precious time. Time that I could have been at the clans already.

A prickle snaked it's way to my neck. Someone was approaching from behind me. I couldn't look back in fear of turning my back to the wolves mercy. A soft hand was laid on my shoulder. I jolted at the touch. Standing beside me was Kian. I side stepped away from him, putting space between us. I hid the surprise on my face.

Kian gave me a sidelong look. Not a hint of emotion displayed on his face.

"Brothers, let us through." Kian's voice was that of a warrior commanding his fellow soldiers. The wolves just merely looked at Kian refusing to move.

"She is Dena's protegee, show some respect" He hissed out that last part. I started to protest that I was no such thing. But I shut my mouth as the wolves moved aside to let us through. I looked at Kian opened mouth. He gave me a smug grin, making me grimace. I looked away from him marching ahead towards the portal. A male laugh sounded behind me, no doubt from Kian.

I paused right before I stepped through the portal. What waited for me there could change everything. Somehow I knew I wouldn't be the same person when I returned. I would be different. I took a deep breath and stepped through.

It felt like stepping through jelly. That was the best way I could explain it. The moment spent between was sluggish. But it happened in a millisecond, before I was through. My eyes widened as I took in the scenery before me. The lushest green vegetation spread as far as the eye could see. No trees were in sight. This must be a plain. The sky over head was the lightest blue. Not a cloud in sight. I stared in amazement, this was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.
