They drove down the pine filled roadway, Kai played his indie-rock, as it blasted through the cracked windows, you could almost see the smooth sound waves leaving the vehicle as they rushed down the highway.
"The least you could do while you're in my car is play some real music." Ophelia rolled her eyes.
"I'm the one paying for dinner so I get to pick the music." He said smugly.
"That's funny because that rule never seems to apply to me." She looked over at him. He was rocking his head to the beat of the music and tapping his foot. Ophelia smiled at him.
Suddenly, she saw his face change from one of enjoyment to one of fear as he opened his mouth to scream but nothing came out. She snapped her head back to the road in front of her but it was too late. She did not have enough time to swerve to the right to get out of the way of the car that was swerving into her lane coming head on. Ophelia only had enough time to swerve slightly out of the way and then she felt the jarring impact. She heard metal crash into metal. She thought she heard herself scream but she wasn't sure. Everything was going so agonizingly slow, like it was happening in slow motion. She see everything happening around her in complete and horrifying clarity. The airbags deployed and she felt it brutally hit her face.
And then the world went black.
Ophelia woke up to the sound of an ambulances faint cries in the far distance, her eyes fluttered open to see that Kai was thrown from the vehicle and was lying in the trench on the side of the road face down. She began to panic, trying to rip her seatbelt off as fast as she could; adrenaline was pumping through her veins, she glanced down to see blood gushing from an open wound on her leg. She didn't hesitate to get out of the dismembered car and limp over to her now unconscious best friend. She began to shake Kai trying to wake him but he wasn't responding.
"Wake up you bastard!" Ophelia screamed as tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Don't you die on me, not after all we've been through!" She held him in her arms.
The air became tense, her body felt numb and her mind went into attack mode. She only felt this way when something or someone from "the other side" was too close for comfort. She glanced over her shoulder and she noticed a tall, thin girl with light lavender hair walking in her direction. Each step the girl took towards Ophelia, the more Ophelia felt her lungs tense.
The girl walked up to the pair and looked down at Kai then back to Ophelia. Ophelia quickly moved to stand protectively in front of her closest friend.
"Stand back." Ophelia spat at the angel who stopped right in front of her.
"My name is Rhea. I'm an Angel. I can help him." She said calmly which only infuriated Ophelia more. Ophelia felt her fingernails lengthen to sharp points. No one was going near Kai. Especially not an Angel.
"I can help him, but you need to let me do it now." She said more urgently than before. She looked in the direction of the approaching sirens. "We have to help him now. Once they get here I cannot help you."
Ophelia hesitated. She turned around and looked at her oldest and most precious friend. There was so much blood. Werewolves can heal themselves but not from wounds this bad. He was going to die. Ophelia was desperate.
She looked back at the angel that stood in front of her and moved out of her way. She didn't like it but she could not lose Kai. It would break her.
Once she moved out of the way, the Angel quickly knelt down next to Kai and put her hands over his chest. She pushed down slightly and closed her eyes. Ophelia saw a bright white light emerge from her hands and looked away as it got brighter and brighter. She looked back down when the light was gone and saw Kai's eyes slowly flutter open. There was still blood but it looked like he was healing. Ophelia let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. The sirens got closer and closer. Ophelia looked from Kai then back up to the angel and she was gone. The ambulance sped up to us and stopped next to her now crushed car.
Paramedics and policemen immediately started asking us questions and asking them if they were alright. They swarmed around them.
"Ma'am are you okay?" Their voices seemed far away.
"What happened here? What's your name?"
Things started to get foggy for Ophelia, she passed out and woke up in the hospital about a day later covered in wires and blankets. She sat up in her bed, the sudden rush of energy left her feeling woozy. She looked around the room in a frantic panic.
"Where is Kai? Where am I?" Her heart dropped to the bottom of her stomach.
The nurse rushed in and laid her back down and explained that Kai was on his way.
"On his way? On his way where?" She spoke in a rush.
About five minutes later, Kai strolled on in carrying flowers and a large cup of water.
He didn't have a single scratch on his body, he turned to Ophelia and gave her a hug.
"The nurses are calling it an "act of God." He laughed a bit as he did air quotations.
"You could say that" Her tone lingered as a subtle laugh escaped her lips.
Kai looked at her confused.
"God didn't save you. An angel did."
