"The telephone booth won't hold her once she becomes a zombie," said Ethan, who was running beside me. "I doubt it could even hold a normal zombie, much less that."
That was referring to the zombie slash rabid dog that Max has became after Stephen had infected him with a push pin, of all things.
I looked at my bitten hand. I wasn't one of the Cured, so I'm not going to turn into something like Max. Instead, I was going to be a normal zombie, but with the new virus infecting me, I guess I would be...smarter? I shook my head and stopped thinking about my own transition.
I'll cross the bridge when I get there.
"Hey guys, I got a cool name for the zombie dogs," said Hazel, slowing down from where she was running with Christian to fall back with us. "Mutts. I got it from the Hunger Games. Max had just been like those dogs, except he had no eyes because Kailey poked it out. That's probably why he bit her. Revenge best served cold and all that."
"What is it with you and Hunger Games?" I asked, rolling my eyes.
"Um, hello. Black hair? Sexy body and kick ass fighting skills? And I don't have gray eyes, but that could be easily covered with contacts. If Jennifer Lawrence hadn't applied for the role, I would have been Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire and goddess of bread." She slid her eyes to Christian, who was running straight ahead. "And Christian would be Gale, and you'd be Prim. And Ethan would be--" she thought for a moment--"the cat."
"Huh? Why the hell would I be the cat?"
"Because if I had the chance, I would have drowned you too," said Hazel, much to Ethan's chagrin.
"Anyway, where are we?" I hastily asked, before Ethan could retort back and result in another full-blown fight. "Before the brothers had kidnapped us, we were just outside the city, in Atlanta. Then when we woke up, we were back in another city."
"Don't know," replied Hazel, looking at the buildings we passed as we ran. "This didn't look like the city we went into before though. They probably transported us into some kind of vehicle. And we would have found the car if we had scouted the hotel, except some masturbating dipshit mutt was chasing us."
The sun was starting to rise, throwing light pink streaks on the horizon. I breathed a sigh of relief. Although it was still mostly dark, at least morning was coming.
"Oh, look, a theme park! Why don't we go visit?" Hazel's voice was bright with enthusiasm as she pointed at a ferris wheel in the distance, her eyes lighting up as she looked at me and Ethan.
In turn, Ethan and I glared balefully at her.
She snickered. "Jeez, I was just joking. No need to get huffy and puffy. I know its stupid, and a total clichè in zombie movies. It would be an insult to my intelligence if I was being serious."
We passed a peeling sign that proclaimed 'Welcome to Enchanted Palace. Where adventure awaits!' and Hazel let out a snort. "I don't know why the people in the movies commonly make the same mistake. Theme parks are filled with people, and once the virus had spread, it would be a common virus soup for transitioning zombies. I bet a lot of them are still there, wandering around, starving for food."
I felt goosebumps rise in my arm as what Hazel said was blown into a full-colored picture by my imagination, including zombies trapped in ferris wheel seats high up in mid-air, their jaws clicking with hunger. There would be families in there, and couples, all zombies, all frozen and stuck, just like the ferris wheel that had long since stopped spinning.
And all of them were just waiting for food.
I put a burst of speed until I was running beside Christian, who looked at me in surprise. I wanted to leave the theme park as far away as I could, wanting to erase the image of zombies forever lying await for flesh to eat, the drool pooling below their feet, their eyes dead--
