“I’m going to miss you Adam,” I said, wrapping my arms round my boyfriend’s neck, inhaling the fresh smell of the washing powder his mum used. The smell that I had grown to love.

“I’ll miss you too, but it’s only for a month, and I’ll be waiting for you when you get home,” he said quietly as I pulled away, yet kept my hands on his shoulders. He pushed my hair behind my ear and kissed my lips softly.

“Bye,” I whispered as we pulled away.

“Goodbye love,” he replied, pecking my lips once more before turning and walking back to his car, parked in the ‘drop off and pick up zone’ of the car park. I turned around, taking hold of my suitcase handle and looked up. This was it. My big break. This was Law school.

“So how is it?” Adam asked me, I was lying on my bed, staring at the ceiling. It was my third day here, and so far, I hated it.

“Good, yeah I’m settling in,” I lied, not wanting Adam to be worried. I knew all too well that at the slightest sign on me hating it, he would be here to pick me up.

“Good, well I’ve got to dash, football practice,” he said sadly, “I’ll speak to you tomorrow Jennifer,”

“Okay, bye. Love you,” I said, sighing a little as I sat up.

“Love you too,” and with that the line went dead.

I plugged my phone into charge and decided to research for the assignment I had, it was due in in two weeks but I had nothing better to do.

I was distracted from my work by shouting outside. My dorm looked over the main road, across the street there was a pub, The Dog, and a couple of small shops – a newsagents and a grocery store. I got up and walked to the window. Outside I could see two guys, both being restrained as they tried to confront each other. One was stocky, slightly below average in height with a buzz cut, dressed in leather. The other was skinnier, taller and had a mop of curly hair.

“Don’t you fucking come near my sister ever again,” shouted curly as he lunged forwards.

“Try and stop me,” stocky sneered. I rolled my eyes and closed the window hoping that it would keep the noise out and allow me to continue with my work.

Just as I was about to sit back down on my bed, there was a knock at my door. I dithered whether to open it, I had work to do, but I was bored and it would at least kill some time right? I opened the door, a blonde boy was stood there, dressed in a black polo and camel chinos.

“Can I help you?” I said, he glanced up from where he was looking at the floor.

“Hi there,, I’m Niall,” He said in an Irish accent, grinning at me “I was just letting you know about the quiz this evening,” he continued, handing me a small A5 sized piece of paper.

“Quizzes really aren’t my scene,” I replied truthfully – well I’d never been to one.

“Oh c’mon give it a shot, we’re all new here and it would be great to get some new friends? Try and get a team together, it’s nothing too competitive,” he assured me, shuffling the remaining leaflets around in his hands.

“I’m sorry, I really don’t-“ I began but I was cut off by the persistent Irishman.

“Come on, it’s free, there’s one free drink for everyone, I really want this to be a success,” he said, his blue eyes staring at me. I sighed, I got the impression he wasn’t going to let up.

“Fine, but I can hardly get a team together, I don’t know anyone here,” I admitted, folding up the leaflet he had given me and shoving it into the pocket of my jeans.

“We’ve got one more space on ours!” he exclaimed, grinning madly at me.

“Okay whatever, where and when?” I agreed, his eyes lit up even more.

“Seven thirty at The Dog, the pub across the road. Be there or... be triangle!” he said running off down to the next door.

“I’m pretty sure you mean square,” I muttered under my breath, closing my door and flopping down onto the bed.
