Prologue: Kataleen's Point of View

"Come on. Hurry!" my sister, Gina, older by a year, yelled, practically pulling me off my bed.

I groaned, turning on my side. "5 more minutes, Mummy."

"Wake up, lazybones!" she yelled in my ear, causing me to jump up and fall off my bed as she burst into a fit of laughter.

My eyes flung open and I got up. "Gina, that hurt, you know!"

Suddenly Mum burst in. "Well you deserve that for being lazy, young lady! Listen. I'm not a bit pleased with your attitude. And your grades. Have you really given your best?"

"What do you call being the top 2 in the overall of fifth grade?" I blurted, and immediately clapped my hands on my mouth.

She grabbed me by my tousled, waist-length black hair, deaf to me asking her to stop as she tugged me down the stairs. Finally, at the living room, she let go, pushing me. The couch luckily cushioned my fall. "And now you're answering me, huh? Huh?"

"What's going on?"

"Dad!" I said out of sheer relief and joy, running into the heavyset, blond man at the kitchen doorway with a tight hug.

He looked at Mum. "Cherry, please, not today. Not on one of the most memorable days of Kat."

"Oh, Harvey, not again! You're always siding with this heck of a curse! And oh, when it comes to fighting with Gina, you always pick her!" Mum said, hugging Gina and her curly, blonde, waist-length hair.

Dad sighed, then turned to me. "Get ready for your fifth grade awarding ceremony, dear. Get dressed. And congratulations!"

I smiled, nodding while saying, "Thanks."

As I ran off into the restroom, used to these stuff, I heard Mum yell, "And you seriously don't care about us?! Gina here is valedictorian and you haven't congratulated her yet!"

"Look, Cher. Of course I'm proud of Gina, but you know well Kat is –"

"Your special, one and only heritage?!"
