Chapter 8

Riley’s POV

I can’t believe she ditched me yesterday. I just can’t believe it, she never ditches me. She always lets me know the few times that she can’t make training, but to not even let me know the night before? What’s up with that?

I shouldn’t have given in so quickly, I should have shouted at her for not telling me! And then not even having the decency to tell me why, just ‘something came up’. I mean really, who does she think she is?

Oh well, nothing can be done about it now, but she better show up today. Mark and I will not plan the whole camp by ourselves, I refuse!

I arrived at the karate studio at 12 sharp, just like Mark said I must. Mark’s car was already parked but Melissa’s scooter wasn’t in the parking lot, so she’s probably going to be late, as usual.

I walked inside, finding mark in the main office. He had a few papers surrounding him, probably the planning for each day.

“Morn- uh, after-,” I paused, “Hey Mark,” I gripped his hand and shook it.

“Riley, good to see you. We might as well start, we know how Melissa can be.”

“Agreed. So what did you have in mind?”

Half an hour went by, Mark and I had planned every day except half of Thursday and Friday, only then did Melissa show up.

“I know, I’m so sorry I’m late, how long have you guys been here?”

“Not too long, don’t worry. We’re almost done, just Thursday and Friday. Then the sleeping and cooking arrangements,” Mark replied swiftly.

Another half hour went by and everything was organized. Melissa and I said goodbye to Mark while he was locking up the studio.

“Let’s grab some food please? I’m starving!” I whined to Melissa.

“Can’t you eat by yourself?” she whined back, “Besides, we’re supposed to be training, remember!”

“You owe me for yesterday, come on,” I grabbed her arm and dragged her all the way to my car. I unlocked the car and we both climbed in. I started the engine and drove out of the parking lot.

“I told you I’m sorry for that, I didn’t mean to forget!”

“How can you just forget? We’ve been training every Monday, Thursday and Saturday for the past two and a half years now!”

“I got distracted ok!”

At the red light, I turned to glare at her, “How were you ‘distracted’ exactly?”

“That look doesn’t scare me, you know.”

I growled slightly, “Answer the question, Melissa.”

A car honked behind me, I honked back angrily, and seeing the green light I speed away.

“I went to a party Friday night, plans changed and the next thing I knew it was Saturday,” she said quietly.

“Did someone try to force you to do something? Did some asshole jump you? What happened??”

“Nothing like that, Riley, it was fine really…more than fine…” she said the last part so quietly I’m not even sure I heard it. I looked her out of the corner of my eye; she had a small smile on her face. What’s going on?

The rest of the drive was silent. When we got to the restaurant, Melissa got out of the car, rushing inside and spoke to the lady at the front counter. I got out and locked the car, stepping inside the restaurant and followed Melissa to our table.
