I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be the greatest fan of your life

Well that stunk. The final seconds just ticked off of the clock and the NFL season was officially over. Maybe not for the two teams that are advancing to the Super Bowl, but for the team that mattered to me, the season was over.

The Patriots tried so hard to win but Denver seemed to be their kryptonite. They battled until the very last play and fell just one play short of another Super Bowl.

It was a tough pill to swallow and I always hated when the season ended. I felt so badly for Danny. It seemed like all of the hard work he put into the game was a waste when his goal wasn't realized.

"Did daddy win mommy?" Our daughter Elizabeth asked. She was cradled in my arms as I stood in front of the television, watching the Patriots walk solemnly off of the field and the Broncos celebrate victoriously.

"No Lizzie, daddy lost," I answered. The girls lower lip quivered.

"Is daddy going to be sad?" She asked with puppy dog eyes.

"Yes, baby he's going to be sad," I ruffled her hair trying to comfort her while comforting myself.

"Awe," Elizabeth answered as she frowned. She squirmed to get out of my hands and I put her small feet back on the ground. She ran down the hallway to her room quickly.

I continued watching the tv, waiting for post game press conferences and reactions. Elizabeth came back with her arms full. "What are you doing Liz?"

"I'm making daddy a card," she said carrying the paper, markers, crayons, and glitter to our kitchen table.

"That's so sweet of you, I'll help you," I stood from our couch and followed the girl into our kitchen. Danny would be home in two hours, if they got out of Denver as soon as they could.

"What are you going to put on the card?" I asked taking my seat next to her at the high table.

"You will see," she assured me. She went right to work and drawing. She began drawing Danny in his uniform and herself next to him holding his hand. "Mommy, can you help me?" She asked sweetly.

"Sure, what would you like help with?" I asked leaning in towards her.

"Can you spell 'I love you daddy'?" Elizabeth asked handing me her red crayon.

"Sure!" I answered her taking the crayon and writing it above the two people on the card. "I think daddy is going to love his card, Liz!"

"Me too. Can we put glitter on my dress?" She asked inspecting the card, looking for more details to add.

"I think that's a great idea," I answered her. We put the glue in the shape of her dress and filled it in the sparkly gold glitter.

"I think it's all done!" She exclaimed holding it up proudly.

"It's beautiful! Daddy is going to be so happy," I said before kissing her chubby cheek. I checked my watch again. "We still have a little time before he gets home, do you want to make him some cookies?"

"Yes!" She quickly got up from the dining room chair and skipped to the kitchen. The little girl had a presence about her that made everything better, and suddenly I wasn't o worried about cheering Danny up.

We mixed the ingredients together and added a lot of chocolate chips, Danny's favorite, before shaping them into perfect balls. The cookies were in the oven and the card was nearly dry from all of the glue.

I was starting to clean up when Elizabeth came back into the kitchen. "Mommy, can I help you?"

"Sure, do you want to go put your markers back in your room?" I instructed handing her the marker box.

"Yes!" She took the box from my hands and ran to her room. The oven dinged and she came running back. "Are they done?" She asked jumping up and down in excitement. I opened the oven and my nostrils were flooded with the delicious smell of the cookies.

"I think so," I answered slipping on my oven mits. Elizabeth helped me arrange the cookies on a platter. Just as we placed the last cookie on the platter the front door closed slowly. "He's here," I whispered. She jumped off of the bar stool and grabbed her card.

"Daddy!!" She screamed running towards the front door. I followed behind her slower. I saw the two loves of my life hugging. "Daddy, I'm sorry you're sad. I made you this card and mommy helped me make cookies," she said thrusting the card forward to Danny.

"Thank you love bug. I loves it," Danny said. He was crouched down to her height and pulled her into his body. He stood up to his full height and brought Elizabeth with him.

I joined the hug too and Danny's strong arm wrapped around my waist. "How are you doing?" I asked concerned. My hand stroked his scruffy cheek as I leaned my head against his shoulder.

"A lot better now," he answered. A smile slipped through his lips as he kissed mine and Elizabeth's forehead. "A lot better."
