There's a love that you can't buy thank god for kids. Thank god for kids there's magic for a while
• • •"Okay, kids. Everyone please put your shoes in your cubbies and your coats on your hook. When you finish that meet me at the circle rug for story time!" I instruct my daycare class full of three year olds. We just finished playing outside in the cool New York fall weather, and now we were going to relax by reading a story.
The kids sit intently as I read them a story about a football player. "The end!" I finish as the kids all applaud. "All of your parents should be coming soon so you all can play until they get here," I say standing up from the rocking chair.
"Ms. Aaliyah," I hear a small voice say as he lightly tugs on my pant leg. I bend down to his height.
"Yes, Bentley?" I ask now that we are at the same level.
"My daddy plays football!" he says nearly bursting with excitement and pride.
"He does?" I say with as much enthusiasm as him.
"Yeah! He kicks footballs realllllllly far for the Giants!" he explains dramatically.
"Well, I would love to meet sometime."
Bentley runs off to play with the other kids after flashing me a polite smile. I go back to the sink area to clean up from our painting project earlier in the day before I go back to playing with all of the kids. Slowly, they all begin to leave until I am left with just Bentley. I sit on the rug next to him and help him build a tower out of blocks.
"Bentley, do you go to a lot of your daddy's football games?" I ask as I stack blocks.
"Yes! Sometimes he plays too far away though so I watch at home with my mommy," Bentley explains as he puts the finishing touches on the large tower in front of us. Suddenly a tall shadow is standing over us both.
"Son, are you ready to go?" a deep voice says. It instantly catches Bentley's attention.
"DADDY!" Bentley runs into his dad's arms. I stand from the colorful rug to send Bentley off for the day. Bentley's dad is gorgeous, tall, and athletically built.
"I'm so sorry I'm late. I had a busy day at work and his mom called me last minute saying I needed to pick him up. I can promise this won't happen again," the man says."I'm Brad Wing by the way, Bentley's dad," he holds his hand out for me to shake.
"I'm Aaliyah. Bentley was telling me all about your work today. He's pretty proud of you, you know?" I say. Brad puts Bentley down, and the boy immediately takes off to play with the toys again.
"He is?" Brad asks, as if he didn't know.
"Yup. He told how you kick balls realllllllly far for the Giants and how if he can't go to your games he watches at home with his mommy," I say, making sure to use Bentley's exact words.
"He watches with his mom? That's... shocking," Brad says. He looks over my shoulder to wear Bentley is pretending to be a ninja.
"Yup, that's what he said. Why is that shocking?" I tilt my head.
"It's just that his mom and I had a pretty nasty break up. I'm surprised she watches our games even when she doesn't have too," Brad explains.
"Oh, you guys aren't together? I did not know that," I half smile.
"No, we're not," Brad's lips break into a full smile. I nod. "Thank you again for keeping him late. He really likes this daycare. It's a good feeling as a parent knowing that you're child is happy when you can't be there," Brad says appreciative of me.
"You're welcome! I'm not technically allowed to say this.. but Bentley is one of my favorites. He is a good kid. And he has come a long way since starting here," I ramble.
"That's great to hear. Since you are saying things that you probably shouldn't say, I'm going to ask you something that I probably shouldn't. But I've really enjoyed talking to you and was wondering if you would like to go out to dinner sometime?" Brad asks nervously. He was cute when he was nervous,as his cheeks burned bright red from fear of rejection.
"I would love to get dinner sometime!" I assure him.
"Really?!" he asks, surprised by my answer.
"Really, it would be my pleasure to go out with you. If you are as great as Bentley says you are than I think I would really be missing out if I said no," I say as he laughs. His laugh was beautiful and true. Like a laugh I had never heard before.
"Well, then how about tonight at 8? I can pick you up," Brad suggests.
"That would be lovely!" I say. We smiles at each other when Brad interrupts the comfortable silence.
"Come on, Bentley. It's time to go buddy," Brad calls his son over. Bentley does as he is told and takes Brad's hand.
"Bye, Bentley. I'll see you tomorrow bud," I ruffle his hair and then look to his dad. "And I'll see you later tonight," I say in my flintiest voice as Brad winks at me before leaving my classroom. I go on to pick up the rest of the toys with a smile on my face and color on my cheeks.
