We'll build our own family one day at a time. Ten little toes, a painted pink room. Our beautiful baby looks just like you• • •
I sat in the kitchen of mine and my husband Julian's house with a smile. He had at practice all day and I was expecting him home at any minute.
Ever since Julian and I got married, we had both wanted babies. Each of us truly loved kids and couldn't wait to have one (or five) of our own. So when I found out that I was pregnant this morning, nearly burst into tears. We both have wanted this so badly and it was finally coming true.
I heard the front door creak open, and my body nearly burst with excitement. I tried to keep my cool by concentrating on the magazine that was in front of me. "Helllllo, my love," Julian cooed as he joined me in the kitchen. He planted a quick kiss on my lips before going to the fridge to find something to drink.
"Hello, handsome. How was practice?" I ask as I flip closed the magazine.
"It was good. How was your day off?" Julian asks as he finally finds the drink he is looking for.
"Productive. I thought of a lot of ideas for when we redo the spare bedroom," I say as I stand from the barstool.
"I didn't know we were redoing the spare bedroom?" Julian crinkles his eyebrows together and tilts his head at me, clearly confused.
"Babe, it is so tacky with the ugly green colored walls and old carpet. We need to redo it. It's tragic in there," I protest as I cross my arms over my chest.
"Okay, fine but I really don't think it is tragic. What are your ideas for it, Holly?" He asks taking a sip from the blue gatorade.
"I'll show you," I say dragging him with me down the hallway. He smiles seeing how excited I am, and it makes me giddy with the news I am about to share.
"Okay, so first we need to clean out this closet," I say going to open the closet door to reveal a bunch of plastic totes stacked on top of each other.
"This is a guest bedroom. Why do they need to use the closet?" Julian argued.
"Because, I think we are going to be using it more now. Next, we need to get rid of this paint color. It's hideous and overwhelming. Sooooo I picked out a few softer colors at the store today," I point to the wall where I tested out various shades of pink and blue.
"You think green is overwhelming but not these pinks and blues?" Julian knits his eyebrows together in confusion.
"Yeah.... green is ugly. Look at the Jets," I say. Julian shrugs his shoulders in agreement.I'm surprised that my husband hasn't caught on to what I am hitting at yet, I thought the paint colors were obvious.
"What other ideas do you have?" he asks. I smile and push my foot into the carpet dramatically.
"Do you hear that?" I ask.
"No, I didn't hear anything," Julian shakes his head. I do it again.
"That's the problem. How are we supposed to hear when their little feet are pitter pattering against the floor if there is carpet in here?" I cross my arms. Julian's eyes brighten up instantly.
"Wait- Holly.... are you- saying what I think you are saying?" He asks looking from my stomach, to the closet, to the paint sample, to the carpet, back to my stomach. I smile and nod and jump excitedly. "You-you're pregnant?" he asks. His eyes suddenly turn glassy and he can barely form words.
"I found out this morning!" I answer. He wipes his eyes ands stands with one hand on his hip. I move so that I am inches in front of him.
"You're going to be a daddy, Jules. The best daddy. We are having a baby," I say. He finally looks at me.
"Words cannot describe how in love with you I am. Ever since I met you, I envisioned what our kids what look like, who they would act like, what we would name them, what they would want to become... and now it's happening. You make my dreams come true every single day. I love you more than life itself Holly, and I promise to give this baby the love and protection it deserves," his words cause my eyes to tear up as well. He lips push against mine and I drape my arms around his neck.
He carries me to our bedroom and lays me on the bed. He lays next to me and pulls my shirt up over my stomach. His hand slowly feels my skin, trying to connect with his unborn child. I laugh as he puts his ear to my stomach and listens.
"So, what do you think?" I ask, as I put a hand on top of his. He shifts his gaze from my stomach to my eyes.
"Think about what?" he asks, the smile never leaving his face.
"About the paint colors, pink or blue?" I finish my question. He sits up now.
"I don't care, as long as it isn't that ugly green and our baby is healthy," he laughs. His lips kiss mine again as his hand goes back to massaging my stomach.
"Can you imagine how big your stomach is going to get?" Julian says in awe. I hit him playfully.
"Can we not talk about that?" I say bashfully.
"Holly, it's going to happen and you are going to be glowing. I can't wait to see you with a baby bump, but I really can't wait until you are holding our child in your arms," Julian smiles as he lays his head on my stomach.
"I can't wait either Jules..." I say stroking his long hair, hoping that these next nine months fly by.
