We were both young when I first saw you. I close my eyes and the flashback starts• • •
"Why are you so excited about this game, Vivian? You usually HATE when we have to go to Dallas," My big brother Victor says, putting a big emphasis on the word hate. Victor, is well known wide receiver for the New York Giants, and everyone knows that the Giants and the Cowboys have one of the biggest rivalries in the entire National Football League.
"Ummm.. I don't know. New season, new me?" I suggest. The real reason was that my boyfriend played for the Cowboys, but Victor didn't know that. Nobody knew. We shook to keep it a secret, because all of the attention we would get because of the rivalry between the two teams.
"Good luck Victor! It's the first game of the season.. please don't get hurt," I say. I give him a sisterly hug as he splits off to the locker room and I go to find my booth. Before I started dating Dak, I found the Cowboys stadium hostile and cold, but today it seemed warm and inviting, even though I was wearing a Cruz jersey. I jingled my wrist, thankful that Victor didn't see the bracelet I was wearing from Dak. It had the Cowboys star hanging from it and a #4.
Halfway through the game I find myself having a hard time deciding who to cheer for. I wanted both of them to win, but I knew that was impossible.
At halftime there is a knock on the door to our booth. I stand to go and see who it is. There is a man in a Cowboys sweatshirt holding a sealed envelope.
"Are you Vivian Cruz?" he asks.
"Yes... I am," I say with a polite smile. He holds the letter out for me.
"This is from the locker room," he says before he walks away. The envelope is scribbled on in messy handwriting but I can see that it says "To Vivian"
Vivian,
Meet me at Gate 4 after the game. It is right outside of our locker room. I can't wait to see you.
Love,
#4I blush at the letter. We met in college and were going to tell everyone we were dating... until he got drafted by the Cowboys. We had been doing long distance for a month now and it was killing me. I held the letter against my chest as the second half got under way.
At this point in the game I couldn't care less about who wins. Now, I am faced with the decision if I am going to find my brother like I always do or if I am going to meet Dak. As the clock works its way all the way down to zero, I make my decision. I pack up all of my belongings and leave the booth.
I wait at Gate 4 for Dak to finish getting dressed and complete his press conference. As I wait I lean against a table as I think about how proud I am of Dak for winning his first NFL game, but also felt bad about Victor. He hated losing especially to the Cowboys, and I wasn't there to comfort him.
"There's my girl!" Dak says as he comes out of the locker room. His voice immediately catches my attention and gives me goosebumps. I stand from the table and run towards him.
"Oh my god! I missed you so much!" I jump into his arms and he catches me just as fast. I push my lips against his for the first time in a month. I forgot how good our lips felt together. He sets me back down on the table I was originally sitting on.
He leans his forehead against mine and whispers "I'm sorry you cheered for the losing team today."
He laughs as I hold my wrist up to show that I am wearing the bracelet he gave me. He takes my hand and brings it to his lips. I remove my hand from his grasp and wrap it around his neck as our lips touch again.
His kiss shut the rest of the world out. So it was no wonder I didn't hear my brother at first. "Vivian?! What are you doing?" Victor asks horrified as Dak and I are making out. I instinctively push him away from me but immediately regret it. I stand from the table and adjust my jersey.
"Victor, I can explain-"
"Then do it!" he crosses his arms. I reach behind me for Dak's hand.
"We are dating. And we have been for almost a year. We were going to tell everyone but then he got drafted by the Cowboys and I didn't want to hurt him or you," I explain. Dal squeezes my hand.
"And when were you going to tell me? After you got married? 10 months is a long time to lie to someone, Vivian," Victor says. He massages his temples, trying to calm his anger.
"Victor, I'm sorry. I just wanted to make sure we could handle long distance before I told you. I didn't want you to have to worry about us if you didn't have to..." I plead. He doesn't answer me and looks directly at Dak now. I return the favor, and squeeze Dak's hand.
"Do you love her?" Victor asks sternly.
"I do. I really do, man, I love this girl," Dak insists. You look to him and smile, when you look back at Victor he is standing closer to you now.
"If you hurt my sister, you can bet your rookie ass will pay for it. She is my sister and deserve the world, so you better treat her right," Victor says through gritted teeth before leaving to find the team bus. Dak turns you to face him now.
"That could have gone worse," he laughs.
"It could have gone better too..." I trail off, looking around the stadium and avoiding eye contact with Dak. He grabs my chin, to make sure that I am looking at him.
"I'm glad that he is so protective of you, that way when I'm not thereto protect you, he is," Dak smiles at me. I return the smile and wrap my arms around him and nuzzle my head into his shoulder.
"I love you," I say, even though it comes out muffled against his shoulder.
"I love you too," He says stroking my hair. "You better go make sure Victor is okay, I'll see you later tonight."
He leaves me with a kiss as I find my way to the team bus to console Victor.
