Chapter 10
Rose POV
I lay there, just relishing the dream that was running through my mind, when I heard the beginning of “Anklebiters” by Paramore playing from my phone. Being severely annoyed, I sat up, threw my phone against the floor, and fell out of my bed. This was a wonderful way to start off a Monday morning. Crawling over to where my phone landed, I gave it CPR and shuffled my music. The song landed on “Burnin’ Up,” by Jessie J and it satisfied me, so I skipped to the bathroom to complete my routine. Fifteen minutes later, I was out of the shower and changing into an oversized mint-colored sweater and black leggings. I didn’t forget to put on my black combat boots either. I threw my hair into a messy braid and made sure to spray on some perfume. When I got downstairs, I grabbed a granola bar and a cold Starbuck’s Frappuccino jar from the fridge. As I was about to call for Mackenzie, she popped out from around the corner, looking as joyous as one could on a Monday.
“Hey, ready to go?” she said, fixing her blouse in the mirror on the wall.
“Yeah, let’s ride in my car today. It’s supposed to rain later.” Slinging my bag across my back, I walked out and left Mackenzie to lock up. We were about five minutes into the ride when my phone chimed from my backpack.
“I gotcha girl,” she mumbled reaching for it. “‘Meet me by the planter closest to the gym? Can’t wait to see you’ with a winky face,” she read to me, raising her brow.
I didn’t even have to ask who sent the message. I shrugged my shoulders and said, “I haven’t seen him since Friday. Just send back an ‘okay.’”
“Nah I think I’ll just say ‘sure sweet thang (;’” she said muffling a laugh while typing.
“Mackenzie Frost!” I yelled, slapping her, trying to keep my eyes on the road.
A minute later, my phone rang again. “What does he want now? Changing your meeting place to the closet by the gym or something?” she said sarcastically.
“I’m totally going to kill you when I park this car.”
“Julio? ‘Long time no see. Meet me by the water fountain next to the track in 1st?’ Rose, who’s Julio? Does he know he won’t get but two minutes with you till lover boy gets in the middle?”
I sighed, “Just someone I met in gym. I’m going to let this all play out and see what Jaycee does about it. Julio’s only a friend, what harm would it do to have one of those? We don’t have many.”
“Whatever you say,” she said in a sing-song voice and got out of the car. Assuming she went to find Blake, I made my way to the planter and tried not to run. As I walked closer, some people called my name, and other guys just whistled. I waved to them all and when I looked forward, I saw him. Leaning against the column, he smiled warmly and I ran the rest of the way to give him a giant hug. He held me tight and I had to stand on my toes to be able to keep my balance.
“Not seeing you for two days is unhealthy,” he said as he pulled back to look at me. Before I could correct him, he cut me off, “Video chatting doesn’t count.”
I laughed and responded, “Well I thought you would’ve just stormed into my house after what happened on Friday.”
“Oh you got me good that morning, I can give you that. I had a little problem with that flag football game though,” he said as he tightened his grip on me. I blushed and looked away, but he turned my head back immediately with a determined look in his eyes.
“Oh Julio? He’s just a friend and he’s pretty cool. Lacrosse is such an awesome sport. I think the girls are going to start the dancing unit today so I think that’ll be fun!” I knew that would set him off, so I tried not to laugh. The bell rang and I mind linked Mack,
