Chapter 5

Rose’s POV

I moaned as I woke up to find my phone smashed against my face. It just so happened to vibrate too, so I threw it on the other side of the bed and stretched. Last night was a blur. I didn’t bother trying to remember, so I just got up and went to shower. Ever since that first text from Jaycee, I’ve felt really weird, so I made sure the curtains in the bathroom were pulled. I couldn’t risk anything, considering he already got my phone number from who knows where.

I finished changing and decided to check my phone before seeing what Mackenzie was up to. There were two unread message from Jaycee. That was no surprise.

Hope you slept well cutie (: Can't wait to see you this afternoon.

Only 9 more hours till I see you!

I’ve dated a lot of guys, and not one has left me a text this eager. It made me feel jittery and eager to see him too. Sure, I barely know him, but I’m hoping all of that will change today. I shook my shoulders to snap out of it and walked to Mackenzie’s room.

Banging on her door, I yelled, “Yo, Mack, open the door!” She hates it when I call her that, so she’ll definitely open up. I smiled and crossed my arms, waiting. After thirty seconds, she didn’t answer. I banged again and put my ear to the door. Nothing. She wasn’t in there. I sighed and dialed her number while walking downstairs to get breakfast. I grabbed a granola bar and my backpack and rushed out of the house.

After locking the door, I ran to my car with my phone between my neck and shoulder. After locking the door, I ran to my car with my phone between my neck and shoulder. When she finally picked up, my mood was very annoyed.

“Mack? Where are you? Class starts in ten minutes and you weren’t home!”

Hey, Rosalinda! I’m already here girl, calm yourself.”  I could hear the laugh in her voice.

You could’ve left a note, ya know; or texted? I’ll just see you later”. With that, I sped off towards school.

As I walked into the building, I caught a familiar scent and froze. Pine and cologne filled my nose. On instinct, I searched for the deep blue eyes that belonged to my mate. Once I found them, they immediately turned black, giving me the note he felt the same way. I must’ve triggered something, because he came racing towards me seconds later. I had to almost tie down my wolf so she wouldn’t force me to shift. The only way to stop the entire human population of Tropic Sands High School from finding out wolves actually exist is to run as fast as I can, away from Jaycee. I still had three minutes until class started, so I had to make this quick. I sprinted past the lockers and saw a bathroom to my right. Rounding the corner, I locked myself in a stall and held my breath. It wouldn’t help because he could catch my scent, but I tried anyway.

Rose? Where’s the fire?  Mackenzie mind linked me. She has perfect timing. I even caught her scent and it seems like she’s in the same bathroom. Hopefully her scent will mix with mine and he won’t come in here. After a minute, I heard a voice, “He’s not coming in here. You can come out and go to class before you’re late.” I heard Mackenzie say. I sighed in relief and stepped out of the stall.

“Thanks Z,” I smiled and hugged her.

“No problem,” she smiled. The bell rang and I walked to gym, soon realizing that Jaycee was in my class. This was going to be a heck of an hour.

________

I changed into my gym clothes and went to stretch before our warm-up. I heard wolf whistles from behind me (no pun intended), but just ignored them.  I was almost finished with my arm stretches when I heard a pair of feet coming fast from behind me. I had no time to turn around before I was tackled to the ground. I could almost hear my skin being eaten off by the cement. I gave a blood-curdling scream. Tears threatened to pour down my face and I pushed who I knew to be Jaycee off me. My wolf hissed in anger, but I didn’t care. I looked around and saw everyone in the class staring at us. I glanced at Jaycee and his face went from a laugh to a blank, guilty expression within seconds.

“What are you trying to do? I’d rather run the track, not wear it! ” I managed to yell while gripping my leg. I winced and saw there was a good-sized gash above my knee and various scrapes on my palms. Jaycee just stood there.

“I meant to surprise you, but I tripped over my laces and,” he motioned to my wound. “Here, let me help you,” he started as he began to lift me onto my feet. “Do you need me to take you to the nurse’s office?”

“No I’ll find my way. Thanks.”  I limped away to the locker room and changed back into my clothes. Wolves heal fast, but not fast enough.  I made it to the clinic and back before the hour ended. I got an excuse note for participating, although I probably could exercise just fine. I wasn’t complaining though, because I really wasn’t in the mood to be around other people at the moment.

________

I let Mackenzie know where I’d be after school, so hopefully she’ll see Jason. He looked terrible after what happened yesterday. I tried to see how he was when he passed by in the hallway today, but he just kept walking. Hopefully it’ll work out between them. I finished getting ready, and it was almost four o’clock, so I grabbed my purse and keys and headed out the door. I’d rather be early than late.

As I shut my car door, I felt arms pull my body back. My head thudded against a chest and I took in my mate’s scent. His arms wrapped around me, and I wanted to hug him back, but he had to explain himself before this goes any further.

I turned around and backed away a few steps. “You still haven’t answered my question. How did you get my number when you gave me yours?” I asked, portraying that I was timid. He took my hand and we sat on a nearby bench. My wolf wanted to shift and just enjoy her mate’s company, and part of me wanted to also, but I wasn’t going to be easy.

Jaycee’s  POV

I just wanted to spend good time with her, but that definitely wasn’t going to happen until she got more comfortable around me. I find it cute that she’s shy around me; I liked that she wasn’t so willing to open up to me. I still felt guilty about the accident though. I plan on telling her what she wants to hopefully makeup for that.  “Rose, I’m the Alpha-in-training of the Avalanche Pack. I have some privileges that only a real alpha has. I can find anything I want. That’s how I got your number. I got excited when I realized you were in my first class, so I thought I would surprise you. It obviously didn’t go as planned,” I said while looking at her wounds. She looked down too and I winced. She didn’t speak after a few minutes, so I took that as a sign to keep talking. “We still haven’t gotten to know each other, and I’m anxious to know more about you. How about we plan a date? The annual Sands Bonfire is coming up. How about we go together? I think it would be-"

My voice caught at the sight of Rose fainting. She hit her head on the corner of the bench as she was falling off the side. I didn't know what I was doing until it happened. I jumped after her and threw my body under hers to break the fall.
