Saving Sawyer: Chapter 1: Blast From the Past
Cade's POV
Olivia sat next to me in the school hall, her bubbly drone going on and on about the new boy in her class. His name was Sawyer, he was a transfer student from Nevada and he was the epically hottest guy on earth. I hadn't seen him yet but I could already guess that he was probably some beach bum with sun-kissed blonde hair and a natural smell of ocean water and driftwood. Don't get me wrong, I typically don't stereotype but that just happens to be the kind of guys that Liv goes after. How we were even friends in the first place astounded me. She was so bright and cherry while I was more realistic...Maybe it's because we managed to level each other out?
"Enough Liv, please." I begged, tired of hearing how hot and sexy he was...I didn't mind her droning but I just wasn't in the mood for it at the moment. I had an eight hour shift right after school and I wouldn't be getting home until about eleven.
She puckered her lower lip, her eyes glazing over instantly. "But I haven't gotten to the best part yet." She whined.
I lightly banged my head against the wall behind me a few times. "Fine, just tell me the best part and then be done."
She jumped to her knees in excitement as she squealed and slapped her hands together. "He's single!" Of course she would think that's the best part.
"Are you done now?" I laughed at her antics. She shook her head and followed my lead down the hall. "Good cause we're late for last period." The halls were pretty much empty by now so at least we didn't have to push through a crowd.
Liv and I tip-toed into the room, students still talking and laughing amongst each other. I didn't really care for the student body here but it still beat being home-schooled by an absentee parent that didn't know anything past Algebra. "Olivia and Cade...nice of you two to join us, please take your seats." Our teacher spotted us from the crowd. I gave a shy smile before pulling my best friend to our seats. "Quiet down now please!" She attempted to control the unruly class to no avail. After two more attempts she gave up and turned the news on.
Liv grabbed my arm and squealed into my ear again. "It's him!"
I looked in the general direction her eyes were glued to, my heart speeding up upon realization. This wasn't just some transfer student named Sawyer...it was Sawyer Valandfi: a boy I hadn't seen since I was eight and a heartache I thought I would never feel again.
His hair was still as dark as ink and his skin still as delicate as I remembered. He sat in the back of the class, away from everyone else. He was still slim but attempted to hide it under a black hoodie; even sitting down, I could tell he was taller than most guys at the school. I could faintly make out the ear buds that he hid under his silky locks and I suddenly wanted to know what music was blessed enough to grace his hearing. He looked up for a moment, his stunning grey eyes stormy and clouded over. I quickly looked back down at my paper, biting my lips to prevent myself from crying.
Liv gripped my upper arm tighter. "Isn't he beautiful?!"
I pulled my arm free, "That's Sawyer Valandfi." I mumbled, a familiar ache returning in my chest. He had been my best friend when I was younger and it killed me when he left. He was there one night and then the next morning when I went to meet him on my way to school, he was gone. His uncle said he was sent back to live with his parents but the news was delivered with a somber tone. "He's back."
"No way! Sawyer Valandfi was a scrawny nobody...this guy is too hot." I knew I was right though. I had been the closest to the boy that didn't let anyone close enough to hurt him and I would know him anywhere.
