Saving Sawyer: Chapter 13: Accept
Cade's POV
My eyes were glued to the TV, looking for any sign that the headline had been wrong. So far, no one discredited it. Liv sat right there with me...I felt horrible. My boyfriend was missing, possibly dead, and my last day with my best friend was shitty. I rested my head in my hands, Liv's arm draped over my shoulders. "Don't worry, they'll find him. He's still alive." She had repeated that sentence at least a hundred times within the past hour.
"What if they don't Liv? If I had walked him in then he'd probably still be here...and what if that was his blood on the carpet? How hurt is he?!" I started to hyperventilate.
"Calm down. Sawyer is fine and they'll find him." I had to say I loved her optimism but right now, all it did was annoy the shit out of me.
Most murders occurring after a kidnapping happened within the first twenty-four hours. What if that was Sawyer's body they recovered? I couldn't live knowing he was dead because I was being neglectful. "I gotta go home." My cell phone was near death and my charger was currently packed up. I needed to keep it charged at all times. What if there was a change and Vivian couldn't reach me? What if they find him?
"I'll drive you." She grabbed her keys off the counter and followed me out silently.
She unlocked the car and slid in, "Liv, I'm really sorry...I didn't want our last day together to be like this."
"It's not your fault Cade." She pecked me on the cheek, something she would do once in a while. "Besides, you don't think I'm gonna pick you up from the valley once in a while." I knew she would, we were too close to just abandon each other.
Posters of Sawyer were plastered everywhere. Vivian wasted no time getting his face out there. I sunk deeper into my seat as we passed his house, the front still taped off. Apparently, none of the neighbors had seen anything more than the rental car, which they wrote off as a visitor. The store had also been closed, which meant that Vivian hadn't gone in, which was expected. She was a wreck and going to work was the least of her worries.
Sawyer meant so much to her and nothing would stop her until she found him.
The car came to a stop all too quickly. Liv parked it and solemnly looked at me. We both had tears in our eyes as we hugged each other. "I'm gonna miss you." I choked out.
"As soon as you get there, text me." She smiled despite, her running makeup. "Who knows, maybe I'll randomly show up."
"Cade!" My dad walked out of the house, Leonie's three kids running past his legs. "Come on son, it's time to go." He got into the moving truck while Leonie got her kids situated in the car.
"I'll promise, I'm gonna call you and annoy your ear off." We both laughed as I got out.
"Wait!" She got out and ran around the car, throwing her arms around my neck. "Maybe I can talk my dad into letting me move into the vacation house with my mom, I can make the move with you." I had to love her optimism. She unsnapped the chain around her neck and refastened it around mine before I could object. She had never even taken off the necklace since I met her, so the act of giving it to me meant so much. The necklace itself was really nothing special. It was a spackled, aquamarine stone on a silver chain that matched the same color as her eyes. I turned it in my fingers a few times, "Now you can't forget me."
"That's impossible." The car horn blasted and I reluctantly got into the truck, leaving my best friend on the lawn of my mother's home.
My dad hummed to the random tunes that leaked from the ancient radio, his fingers thrumming the beat on the steering wheel. "What's wrong Cade? We're moving, don't look so depressed."
