Saving Sawyer: Chapter 12: Flashing Lights
Cade's POV
Liv stopped at a red light and looked at me, her eyes gleaming. "You two are cute together."
My lips were still stinging and even a bit numb. "He said 'yes.'" She squealed and stomped on the gas. "Slow down, you're going to kill us!"
"I do know how to drive babe." She turned onto my street and stopped in front of my house. At least I thought it was my house...my house didn't have a moving truck in the driveway, already half full with filled boxes. "What the hell Cade?" I could see the fear in my best friend's eyes and I felt the same. She also looked betrayed, as if I had knowledge of what was going on and I just didn't tell her.
I got out of the car and ran up to the open door. "Dad?" I called out.
"In the kitchen!" I stomped through the hall, coming to a stop two feet away from him. He was packing dishes while Leonie helped. "Welcome home."
"What are you doing? Why are you already packing?" I looked into the now bare living room, the whole atmosphere seeming wrong.
Leonie and he smiled at each other, "The house is ready early."
"What about school...my friends?" What about Sawyer?
"You'll have tomorrow to say good bye to everyone." He said it like it was the most natural thing in the world. I knew he was going to uproot me but I didn't think it would be this quickly.
I ran up to my room, the walls bare and the furniture partially moved out. My bed was stripped and my drawers were already emptied. I trekked back down and swung myself into the kitchen. "Where's all my stuff?!"
"We packed it for you sweetie." Leonie smiled and I bit my tongue to keep from cursing at her.
My dad placed a plate into the box and walked into the hall, returning with my old school bag. "We put some clothes in here for you." I snatched it and tossed it over my shoulder.
"I'm gonna stay at Liv's tonight." I mumbled, turning to the door.
My dad followed. "Excuse me, where do you think you're going?"
"I said I was going to stay at Liv's." I filled in.
He grabbed my arm and pulled me back. "I didn't say you could..."
"No, I did." Leonie smiled as she walked out of the kitchen, her stomach leading the way. "I didn't know the house was going to be ready." I didn't know what to say. There was no way in hell I ever would have asked permission, let alone hers but she was stopping a fight between my dad and I. I mumbled a quick thanks before running out the door and throwing my stuff into the back of Liv's car.
"What's going on?" She asked as I reclaimed my seat next to her."
I slammed the door and motioned for her to go. "The house was ready early. Tomorrow is my last day."
"That's not fair!" She turned onto Sawyer's street, the only way to get out of my neighborhood. I was steaming at the thought that I was losing everything but that all faded when I saw the lights.
Vivian was sobbing on her front lawn, Keith and a police officer trying to calm her down. "Pull over!" I yelled, even though she already was. As soon as the car came to a stop I jumped out and ran up to her, my heart seizing. I tried to look for Sawyer but he was nowhere in sight.
"Excuse me son, you can't come over here." An officer stopped me, his hand wrapped around my arm.
"I - I know them. Vivian!" She looked around, her eyes coming to rest on me. She motioned for the officer to let me go and I was by her side within the minute. "What happened? Where's Sawyer?"
