Saving Sawyer: Chapter 16: Cades in Da' House

Cade's POV

I stared at the series of pictures that had been sent to me repeatedly. Sawyer must've been in a hurry when he took them because they were all distorted. I could faintly tell it was a row of houses but I couldn't make out the addresses. The fact that the pictures had been taken at night didn't help either. I had forwarded the message to Vivian over a week ago but there was still no change in the case. She even tried to have his cell phone traced but Sawyer must have disabled the tracker on it. Vivian and I had once again hit a dead end. Although, I did know he was alive. The body they had picked up had belonged to a boy that went missing four years ago. The police and news say the cases are not related but I couldn't help but feel otherwise. The body was badly beaten and there were signs of drastic abuse of all forms. I felt bad for the guy and I hope Sawyer wasn't going through the same torture.

My new school was a bore. It already had all its little clicks and circles that I obviously wouldn't belong to. I missed Liv and the old house, but most of all, I missed Sawyer. I wanted him to be with me or Vivian - at least then I'd know he was safe.

"Watch the tree!" Someone yelled two seconds before I felt the impact. My cell fell from my hands and clattered to the concrete. The papers I had stuffed into my bag carelessly had flown out and were now scattered all through the street. My forehead ached from where I had apparently walked into a tree and all I could see were stars. "Hey man, you okay?" Someone helped me up but all I could think about was my phone. The ancient thing was a piece of shit and I prayed to God that it hadn't broken.

"Thanks." I mumbled as I picked up the device. It seemed okay. "I should really watch where I'm going..."

He let out a slight chuckle as a car flew by, taking most of my papers with it. "I hope you didn't need those."

"Not really." I stuffed my phone back into my pocket.

"I'm Gage by the way - what's your name?" I could tell Gage had a rough edge to him but he was nowhere near as alluring as Sawyer. The sun that peeked through the trees highlighted his bronze hair, his crystalline eyes equally as shimmering.

I hiked my bag further up on my shoulder. "Cade." I offered him a sideways glance before I continued walking.

"Hey!" He jogged to catch up with me. "You're new, right?"

"Yeah?" I allowed the word to fall off my tongue hesitantly.

He bit the corner of his lip, something I had seen Sawyer do a couple of times. "Since you're new and all, would you like to come to a party at my house tonight?"

I looked at him credulously, "A party?"

A bright smile lit up his face. "Yeah, a lot of people from school will be there...it'll give you a chance to meet some new people."

"I'll think about it." I said, wanting to get rid of the creepy boy that invited me to his house for a supposed party.

He shrugged and began walking next to me. "We're going the same way so we might as well go together - besides, who else is going to look out for trees?" Despite myself, I laughed. "...and he smiles!" Gage threw his arm around me but I simply shoved mine in my pockets.

Gage hadn't shut up for a second as we walked. I learned he was in two of my classes, hence why he recognized me, and put himself in the running to become my new best friend. He was bubbly and outgoing - characteristics I was already used to dealing with.
