Saving Sawyer: Chapter 20: Happy

Cade's POV

I could hear the annoying beeping in my ears, the sound seeming to never end. My head was pounding and movements seemed almost impossible. Everything around me seemed so bright.

"Don't worry babe...he's going to be okay." It was Leonie's voice. A baby began to fuss and she shushed it. "It's alright."

"Let me hold her." My dad's voice sounded almost defeated.

I moaned, the lights still blinding me.

"Cade?!" They both questioned at once.

I wanted to respond but my mouth still refused to listen to me. Leonie took the baby and put her back in a carseat, my dad coming over to my side. "How you feeling son?"

I tried to sit up but the brace wrapped around my torso wouldn't let me. "Where's Sawyer?!" I asked frantically.

"He's with Vivian." Leonie sat down at the foot of my bed. "They were here about an hour ago...if he had it his way, he'd never leave." She smiled as if it was some kind of joke.

"He's already released?"

My dad grabbed my hand, "Cade, you've been a coma for the last two weeks." I was in a coma?

I looked back to the baby, then to a non-pregnant Leonie. "When was she born?"

"Last week...her name is Hope." She picked the car seat up off the ground and into my view. She looked at me with huge brown eyes and smiled, her gums fully visibly. I moved to get closer to her and it was then that I noticed my legs felt like complete dead weight. I could see them under the blankets so I knew they were there, but I couldn't feel them. I guessed they saw the alarm in my eyes because they got quiet.

"Cade...there was pressure exerted on your spine when you fell. The doctors say you may regain feeling when the swelling goes down." His voice sounded hopeful but his face was the complete opposite.

"I'm paralyzed?" Even asking the question seemed ludicrous. I couldn't be paralyzed.

Leonie hugged me, my mind still in shock. "I'm sure you'll be able to feel something once the swelling goes down." She smiled but I was no longer paying attention. 'Why me mom?' I questioned in my mind. 'I went in there to help Sawyer...this wasn't supposed to happen to me.'

"I'm going to take Leonie home. I'll be back soon." My dad picked up Hope's carrier and followed Leonie out.

I had gone in there to save Sawyer and I ended up being the one that needed saving, boy was I feeling pathetic. While not being able to feel my legs came as a shock, I was over joyed that Sawyer was okay and safe with Vivian. I looked down at my legs, my hand rubbing over my shin. I still expected to feel something but it was completely numb.

"Good morning!" Vivian smiled as she walked in, Sawyer on a pair of crutches following her. His face instantly brightened once he saw me and my heart began to gallop in my chest. I pulled him onto the bed next to me, his body falling over mine. We both slightly laughed, and then he leaned down and pressed his lips to mine. Vivian walked out to give us some space.

"I missed you so much." I whispered as if it were a secret between the two of us. My hands wrapped around him, feeling the lean muscles on his back. I pulled him closer as if he would disappear at any moment. I kissed him again, this time it lasted longer than a few seconds. I reveled the way his lips formed to mine and the way his hands roamed in my hair. He felt amazing pressed against me. For years I imagined what it would be like to kiss him but nothing I imagined was as good as the real thing. He moved his leg and the cast that currently covered it rammed into my own.
