Saving Sawyer: Chapter 18: Running Like Mad

Cade's POV

I opened my gallery and pulled up the pictures Sawyer had sent me. I held them up against my view, comparing the sight. "Hey Gage, do these houses look similar to you?!" I asked, getting the whole question out of my mouth in under a minute. He looked at my dimmed screen then back to the next street.

He shrugged, "I guess...although the picture quality is horrible."

I already knew that Captain Obvious...I mean, Captain Football. Before I knew it my legs were carrying me back through Gage's room and down the stairs. I pushed my way through the crowds of sweaty people, ignoring their objections and slurs. I threw open the front door and plunged into the night. The only thing I could think about was this was the closest I've been to Sawyer since he went missing and I wasn't about to dismiss the little evidence that I had.

"Cade!" Gage ran behind me, catching up in no time. "What in the hell just happened?" His cheeks were flushed a bright red, the side effect of running for a white boy who tried speaking Spanish.

I wanted to explain and maybe get his help but that would take too long. If those where the houses that Sawyer had tried to photograph then I didn't want to waste any time getting to him. Then on the other hand, I had just met Gage this morning...was he a person I could actually trust? Trust never really came easily with me, but I really had no time for my morals at the moment. "I think those are the houses he sent me..." I blurted, even though I knew he had no idea what was going on.

"Who?"

"Sawyer...those are the houses." I spoke more adamantly as I grabbed my cell and ran to the neighboring street. I angled it so that the color order of the residences would match up, giving me a better idea of the initial capture.

Gage shook his head once he caught up again. "This is some freaky shit Cade - what are you pulling?!" He was alarmed and why shouldn't he be? The new kid that he just met today was acting abnormal.

I shushed him, not wanting to bring the attention of the owner of the house. "Have you heard of the boy that went missing?" He shook his head. Of course he heard of him...who hadn't? His kidnapping was all over the news for crying out loud!

"Yeah...I thought they found his body though?"

I shook my head, "No, that body belonged to a boy that went missing like four years ago." I shoved my hands into my pockets, felling a bit vulnerable talking about Sawyer. "He's my boyfriend and a week ago he sent me the picture of the houses...If these are it, then he's here somewhere. The cops couldn't do anything because they didn't really have an address, but I don't need one." I crouched next to the fence that marked a border, slowly moving until the houses were nearly in line. I looked around, noticing I was standing in front of one of the larger estates on the block. The picture had been angle up so the capture sight must have been low. I scanned the ground, not willing to give up. Gage watched me with natural curiosity. To be frank, I didn't care if he thought I was crazy right now. I would look insane in front of the president of the United States if it meant getting my boyfriend back.

"Cade," Gage rested one of his hands on my shoulder, "there's a window over there..." He pointed to a small area covered by brush, only inches above the well-trimmed grass. I looked to the house, it was completely blacked out. It was also the same place that the car returned to, meaning someone was home. I placed a finger over my mouth to silence any further talking from Gage and ran along the fencing. Gage followed, being surprisingly quiet for a football player. I slipped my cell back into my pocket and crawled toward the window, the basement room inside was barely lit by an old light bulb that hung from the ceiling by a rustic chain.
