Fawlty Hotel

nine twenty-three, Saturday December Twentieth, twenty-sixteen.

I was sitting on the couch Indian style, legs drawn up around me, Max's sweater falling around them, scrolling through my facebook when I got a notification,

(20% battery left)

(would you like to enable power saving mode?
Yes
Not now)

I clicked yes and watched as the green battery bar turned yellow, telling me that power saving mode was in fact, enabled. I heard Max moving under the covers of the bed but thought nothing of it, he's been rolling around since eight that morning so I didn't even bother as to look up.

"(y/n)?"

"Mhm?"

"How long have you been up?" he said sleepily,

"About an hour or so, sleep well?" I teased from the couch,

"Oh yeah, um.. about this." He said sitting up and gesturing to the bed around him. "You were having a fuckin' nightmare last night, woke me up so I-"

"Thank you," I mumbled, smiling at him. He ran a hand through his hair "Ross called for you by the way," I said,

"Oh fuck, I never told them where I was, did you answer?"

"Yeah I did, I think he's probably going to tease you now."

"Oh great," he mumbled, "What a fucker."

"You get grumpy in the mornings?"

"Do not!"

"Yeah, OK." I said sarcastically.

I had plans to go looking for jobs that day so I walked Max home and started walking around town, in my blue skirt and top from yesterday. I looked down at myself, at my white tennis-work shoes and my wrinkled and crumpled bottom and blouse, and made a decision to go back to my old apartment and grab what little stuff I could round up before Eli got home from work, I nodded once to myself and turned around, speed walking in the direction of the apartment I had lived in since I was eighteen years old. I didn't bother knocking since I still technically still lived there, and opened the door, heading immediately up the stairs and to the right into our bedroom. There were clothes all over the floor, some his, others of a woman he undoubtedly had been sleeping with and directed myself to the closet.

"Fucking' hell." I whispered, none of my clothes hung in the closet, I moved to the dresser where none of my initial clothes were either, though after digging around I found some old pairs of jeans and some shirts I hadn't worn since like- 1932. Sighing, I tossed them in a bag found in the closet and went to the bathroom, where I grabbed an unopened toothbrush and some toothpaste, I grabbed my phone charger out of the living room and my laptop out of the dining room, I found the TV I had bought had been smashed with a baseball bat, of which was leaning against the wall surrounded in glass shards.

I contemplated taking him to court but ultimately, I didn't care too much. I grabbed my purse- holding my wallet, my makeup, some Kleenex and the like- from the entry way, dumped a couple pairs of shoes in the bag from upstairs, snatched a few bananas and granola bars and canned goods from the kitchen and left out the back door, whistling as I did so. As I turned the corner I saw Eli pulling up in his car, I watched as he hauled himself out the driver's side and watched as a skinny blond stepped out of the passenger's seat. She flicked on a pair of expensive sunglasses and ruffled her hair, then laughed the most fake laugh I'd ever heard before. I waited until I heard the close of a door and sprinted through the front lawn, turning a corner and dashing behind the neighbors fence, turning not to see if I would encounter an awkward situation.

I went back to my hotel, threw on some old jeans and a varsity college sweatshirt, tied my hair back and set out for job hunting once more, only to return two-hours later empty-handed and jobless.

I still had money in the bank, enough to get by for a couple of weeks until I could find another job so I wasn't completely worried, in fact I had enjoyed the majority of the day. Around five-thirty that evening I got a call from an unknown number,

"Hello?"

"Want to come to a party?" Said a man's voice,

"well I mean hells yeah, but who's this?"

I heard a chuckle from the other end of the line, a laugh I vaguely remembered.

"It's Tim,"

"Oh! OOOHHHH! Hey Tim!"

"Hey, Max would have called but he was too much of a bitch-"

"Was not!-" I heard Max from behind Tim, I then heard the sound of a smack, followed by more of Tim's laughter,

"To invite you so I thought I would, It's just a couple of our friends."

"Yeah sure!" I said happily, "When and where?"

"Our place and... hang on,- Max when? Oh, OH okay, AM NOT I JUST FORGOT! That was rude," He huffed into the phone, "Sorry it's next Friday night, you good?"

"Totally good, I'll be there. Hey how'd you get my number?" I asked,

"Ross and I were at Ihop yesterday morning, asked that chick Callie for it."

"Cool, Well I'll see you there Tim-Tim!"

"Bye," He said before hanging up. I was sitting on the couch with my laptop open, searching for job ads in the area online, finding little to zero of which requirements I met, and I decided to go for another walk, only instead of wearing my varsity sweater, I pulled on Max's and headed out.
