"Amelia! Amy honey wake up." someone called softly near my ear and started shaking me.
Wait a second, I'd recognize that voice anywhere!
"Demi?" I murmured out and cracked my eyes open, willing the sun not to blind me.
"God Amy you scared us." Demi breathed and started shaking her head.
I looked around,"Uh Demi? Why am I on your floor?" I inquired as I met my best friends worried eyes. What the hell was going on here?
"Oh Amy, you don't know what's going on do you?" Demi asked softly and I sat up and shook my head.
Standing up, I walked into her living room where Jen was crying into a throw pillow on Demi's couch. Mascara was running down her face and her black hair was tied up into a messy bun."Jen? Jen what's wrong?" I asked and ran toward my friend. She just stared off into space, and when I looked over I saw what she was looking at. The windows and doors were all boarded up.
"Jen, please tell me what's going on." I pleaded her and her scared blue eyes met my own.
"They're out there." she whispered before turning to stare at the window again. I froze, what was out there? I got off the couch slowly and backed away from Jen. She was in shock or something. I made my way back into the hallway and leaned against the wall and sank to the ground. I needed answers. I wanted my parents.
I closed my eyes and rested my head against the wall. I heard the creaking of footsteps coming down the hallway and then I heard them stop. I opened my eyes and looked up into a familiar set of eyes. Scott. "Hi." I murmured and he nodded before crouching in front of me.
"Hi Amy." his low voice greeted me.
"Scott?" I asked quietly.
"Yeah?"
I continued warily,"Scott, what the hell is going on? Jen is in shock. The windows are boarded up. There isn't any sign of my parents or your own-"
He cut me off,"Jen is in shock, your right. The windows are boarded up 'cause none of us felt like getting eaten by one of the hundreds of those THINGS out there that I have watched devour multiple people like happy meals. And our parents? They left us because they don't care."
What? I was so confused.
"Scott, my parents would never just leave m-"
Again, he cut me off,"Well they did Amy. And now it's just you, Demi, Jen and I left to fend for ourselves." heconcluded then stood up and started walking away.
I scrambled to my feet and followed after him,"I don't unders-" he startled me as he turned toward me and grabbed my arm harshly, dragging me up the stairs, flinging open the curtains on his parents bedroom window.
My eyes adjusted to the fading light of the sunset and I squinted down at the street.
They looked like people but if you really looked at them, they weren't even close. They staggered around the road aimlessly, groaning every now and then when they saw something move that wasn't.....one of them. My eyes settled on one hunched over something on the road. What..? Was that....Oh God. My eyes widened as it chewed on my neighbor of five years. He was dead of course but that didn't make this any less gruesome.
I held back the vomit, knowing that it would be nothing but burning bile and turned around quickly, running into Scotts broad chest. He gripped my shoulders more gently this time and leaned down so he was eye level with me.
"Amy, do you understand now? There is nothing out there except those things and us." he stated matter-of-factly. My eyes filled with tears and he enveloped me in his arms. All the while I sobbed into his shirt.
This couldn't be happening. But of course, it was.
