We had been driving for hours. Lucky for us, the tank was full of gas. It obviously belonged to someone who was trying to escape the town. Jen and Demi were sound asleep in the back. I couldn't sleep, my eyes seemed to be glued open, never once had they lowered in want of sleep. I glanced at Scott, who hadn't talked to me once since the scene outside.
"Scott?" I addressed him softly. His knuckles whitened as he gripped the steering wheel like he was trying to choke it.
With his jaw clenched and his face turned toward the road he spoke,"That was stupid Amy. That was so unbelievably stupid. How could you just waltz down a zombie invested road alone like that? Huh?" he prodded me angrily.
I adjusted my ponytail and replied,"I wasn't thinking about it. It was a split second kinda thing."
He scoffed at me,"Damn right you weren't thinking. You almost got yourself killed."
My fingers brushed against the cool chain on my neck and I pulled the cross out of my shirt. It gleamed in the fading sunset and I smiled, remembering the day I got this.

"You're good at everything. It's not fair." I whined at my brother Luke who was leaned over my desk helping me with my algebra homework. Of course he understood it all perfectly!
He laughed at me and smiled,"No I'm not Amy."
I let out an unlady-like snort,"Yeah right. You're the star quarter back on the football team, you've gotten straight A's FOREVER, and all the girls are all over you all the time! And you're a very respectful guy Luke. In short, you're any parents perfection." I concluded matter-of-factly.
He sighed and sat down on the edge of my bed,"Mom and Dad love you Amy."
"They love you more." I retorted stubbornly.
I poked the silver cross that was always dangling from his neck.
"Is this where all your luck comes from?" I asked jokingly and he smiled softly at me.
"Sure why not?" he chuckled slightly.
He looked at me seriously for a moment,"Tell you what, I'm gonna let you wear this. We'll see if it's lucky or not." he smirked at me and started lifting it over his head.
He slid it over my neck and it rested warmly in between my breasts. It felt reassuring and strong.
I smiled hugely at him,"Thanks Lukas." calling him by his full name.
He ruffled my hair and poked my nose,"Your welcome Ames."
~ Back To Present ~
Unfortunately, something did happen to him. A week later. And no one knows how he died except Scott Walters. The boy sitting next to me. The guy that stopped talking to us since then. I had always wondered what really happened but never got the courage to ask him. Scared of what the answer might be.
"So where are we?" I inquired softly.
He shrugged,"I'm guessing somewhere close to Dallas? I'm not sure though."
I nodded and looked out the windshield. I saw a small light flashing in the distance and tugged on Scott's sleeve,"What's that?"
He squinted and his eyes widened a tad,"I think that's a flashlight. There might be someone up there!" he said a bit to loudly.
"Ughh...you guys are loud." Demi grumbled from the back seat. Her head popped in between the two front seats,"Now, who's up there?" she asked.
I answered,"We think people are up there. Like...LIVE people." That woke her up. She kinda bounced up and down excitedly for a while before Scott glared at her. We both laughed at him and she stopped moving.
Jen woke up then. Great the whole car was awake now! Demi moved back to talk to her about guys or something. I listened to they're conversation with dull interest. "So Jen did you have a boyfriend?"
"Demi? Why do we have to talk about people we've lost?"
"Oh...I'm sorry Jenna!" Demi's apology floated in the air as she spoke Jen's full name.
"It's alright. I did...and if he got away and there IS some sort of safe haven..then I'm assuming I still do have one."
"Who was he?" Demi prodded.
"Do you know Brandon Lakely?" Jen asked.
"Yeah..Everyone knew Brandon Lakely, why?"
"Well...his younger brother Matthew and I..sorta had a thing."
"WHAT!?" Me and Demi both exclaimed and you could see Jen's face heat up even in the barely there light.
"Jen! He was a total sweetheart!" I blurted and she nodded, gnawing on her lip.
"I know. I...I miss him." she whispered and we all got quiet as the earlier sadness washed over the truck.
Scott cleared his throat,"Um guys? I think there's someone out there."
He began slowing the truck down. We all got quiet and we heard the distinct sound of groaning zombies in the distance as the flashlight got closer. Scott stepped out of the truck careful to keep an eye out.
His eyes got huge as he yanked the flashlight from his bag and waved it in the air,"HEY! Come on! Hurry!" he yelled.
Demi's, Jen's and my own face were pressed against the windows trying to get a look at what was out there. About three people ran quickly towards the truck. My door flew open and someone lept on top of me and the back doors opened as two people hopped in there. Scott got back in the truck and floored it out of there. We past a whole mob of zombies starting to cover the highway.
Everything got quiet except the strangers heavy breathing.
"Uh could you move?" I wheezed out at the person sitting on me.
"Shit! Sorry!" a deep voice called from above me.
They sat up, grabbed my waist, and pulled me onto their lap as I yelped.
"Watch the hands!" I demanded and looked to see whose lap I was sitting in.
Both our eyes widened as I stared into his familiar blue gaze.
