"Alright guys, go around and pack a bag of some necessary items around the house." Scott spoke quickly.
"Can we all get showers first? I feel filthy." Jen murmured and Scott nodded gently.
"Yea, go ahead and get cleaned up." We all had an unspoken agreement - We would let Jen go first.
Once Demi and Jen had gotten dressed and started packing, I finally got my warm shower I'd been waiting for. This was crazy, what we were about to do. I was so nervous my legs felt like jelly and I sat on the floor of the shower, letting the water carry my long blond hair wherever it wanted. I tried breathing deep breaths and I started to calm down.
Wrapping the towel securely around myself I padded across the hall into the guest room. I tucked the towel under my arms and combed my hair out. I stood in front of the mirror, and my eyes glanced down at my bare neck. No no no no no. I wrenched my jeans off the floor and yanked on the pockets frantically, and when my pinkie came in contact with a cool metal chain I settled down instantly.
I pulled the necklace from its hiding place in my jeans and stared at it in my palm. It was a simple thing. Silver chain and a plain silver cross on the end of it, but it was L-
"Amy? Um, before you get naked could you maybe let me get out of the room?" Scott asked wryly from the closet. I glared at him and jutted out my arm, pointing toward the door. He strode out of the room without a second glance.
Once he had left, I got dressed. Purple t-shirt, skinny jeans, leather jacket, and some black sneakers? That was my standard gear, thank God Demi was my size. I yanked my long hair into a pony tail that still reached past my shoulder blades. And then I slipped his necklace over my head. I tucked in the cross and tried to smile, only to fail miserably and ended up scowling.
With my bag slung over my shoulder I walked into the hallway and stopped when I saw Scott staring out the window.
"Scott? I think we are all ready to.... Uh you OK?" I asked.
He pointed out the large window,"You see that?"
Looking down at the street my eyes focused on what he was pointing at. A duffel bag.
"Yea..I see it." I stated obviously.
He continued,"That bag has a Military seal on it." and he raised his eyebrows at me expectantly.
Then it dawned on me.
"It probably has supplies or weapons in it." I murmured and he nodded slowly, looking longingly at the duffel.
"Do we...do we need that?" I asked and his blue eyes met mine as he answered.
"Yea, it could be seriously helpful considering we don't have but one gun and only enough ammo to last us a day or so. Amy we definitely need that bag."
I sighed heavily and thought about it.
This is a huge risk. Not only do we have to get out of the town but we also have to stop and get a bag? A bag filled with necessary items that could be keen in our fight for survival...
"I say we get it Scott." I gulped out and he nodded once stiffly and grabbed his bag, the both of us headed downstairs. Jen was smiling for once. It was a tiny smile but she was smiling, at the little fish swimming around in a bowl in the kitchen. She fed it and then frowned.
"I'm sorry little guy." she whispered.
"Jen?" I called and she turned toward me, looking much better. She was still frowning though.
"I know we can't do anything for it Amy." she said and I nodded.
"Scott can you help me figure out how to operate our new plan?" I asked and Demi stopped packing to look up at us in question.
"What new plan? I thought it was just going to be us getting out of the town and then...I don't know, finding a stable place somewhere."
Scott and I looked at each other knowingly.
"Demi we have to stop for something on the way. A duffel bag, probably filled with sup-" Scott said before he was cut off by Demi.
"Probably filled? We don't have the time for probably Scott."
"We have to at least try." He stated strongly and I nodded in agreement.
Jen looked nervous and asked in a tiny voice,"What if there's nothing useful in the bag and one of us gets hurt or killed for no reason?"
Demi's clenched fists landed on her hips, showing her full intention of taking up with Jen.
"Look, there's a Military seal and everything. The least we can do is try, ok? And besides we can't afford to lose whatever IS in that bag. Our one gun and a small amount of ammo alone aren't even going to get us to the edge of town if we have any trouble." Scott bit out, exasperated, making his final point.
Jen gulped once and nodded, we all looked at Demi, who had the saddest expression on her face. My eyes pleaded with her. A tear escaped her eye and she sniffled and nodded.
"Whatever guys. Don't expect me to watch when one of you gets hurt."
She threw her bag over her shoulder and waited for us by the door. Scott slipped the gun into the waistband of his jeans and we all looked around the house one last time. Demi took a picture of her whole family out of the frame and folded it up, slipping it into her pocket. Time to go. The thought rang out in my mind.
