The door of the room opened. She’s been waiting here for maybe 10 minutes. As soon as she saw the man dressed in white she raised to her feet.
“Hello doctor” She said with her clear voice.
The doctor was shocked by the way the girl looked, based on her chart it should have been someone with different features. He collected himself regardless of the shock, but she could still see the shock in his staring eyes. “Please have a sit” the doctor spat out. The two of them took their sits in the appropriate spots; the doctor behind his desk, the girl in the patient sit. “Brya it is?” The doctor asked to make sure he is not holding the wrong chart.
“Yes.” She said shortly. Her answer left a small moment of silent between the two of them. The doctor opened up the yellow folder he had brought in.
“I understand this is your first time visiting my office, correct?” He said looking up from the papers and taking off his glasses.
“Yes.” She said again. It’s an interesting habit she has to answer with a quick tone, answering with this manner is her way of telling people she is not interested in small talk.
The doctor hesitated for a moment to study the information the nurses has jotted down more carefully. “Very well. How can I help you then?” He asked still looking at the papers.
“Well doctor…it’s been a while that my knee has been hurting me greatly. It hurts when I walk sometimes and some other times it just doesn’t want to move. It’s very scary because it has never been this bad.” She paused. The doctor didn't look like he is listening; she continued regardless “I am not the type to run to the doctor’s office very quick so I waited for a week before making an appointment.”
“You say it never has been this bad. What do you mean?” the doctor read in between her words.
“My knee has always been a bit painful but it used to go away with a few stretches. My concern is that right now it’s getting worse out of nowhere.” She said.
“When did it first start hurting?” the doctor asked as taking notes.
“I believe ever since I was 15. It would come and go. It’s never been constant.” She rubbed her forehead.
“Do you know of any certain things that would trigger the pain? Cold weather, too much exercise…and such things” He rephrased his question.
“I really don’t know.” She said and tried to remember.
“That’s okay. So tell me what do you do when the pain comes?” The doctor put his pen down and looked at her.
“I would stop wearing heels so much… at least not when my knee is hurting. I would use the hot towel, do some stretches and you know the basic things but lately nothing helps. So now I’m here.” She said and went quite. The doctor was busy shuffling the papers in the folder; perhaps not even listening to what she said. She was bothered by how he didn't pay attention to her as he should have.
“I see you brought in an x-ray of your knee, seems like you are a doctor yourself.” The doctor said and looked up to smile at her momentarily. She laughed through her nose.
“I just have been in the doctor’s clinics a lot and I already know what you need so this is me tryina speed up the process.” She said jokingly yet serious.
“Sounds fair to me.” The doctor said. He pushed his chair out and looked at the x-ray in the light. “Aha!” He said.
“What is it?” She asked worriedly.
“Before I get into this let me ask, have you been a former sport player? Or any other activity that might get you injured?” the doctor said as he sat down in his chair.
