Avery's P.O.V.
It was already eight in the evening when we left Venice. We were lucky that there was no traffic, but it takes an hour and thirty minutes to get back to Middleton.
When we pulled up to the school parking lot, Principal Martin was there. He looked like he was expecting us because he just stared at Jake's Range Rover and Darren's Mercedes Benz.
"And just where did you sneaky juniors go?" he asked.
Jake, Amber, and I exchanged nervous glances, but Darren looked calm because he's an expert when it comes to lying and making excuses.
"We, uh, visited my sick grandmother," Darren said.
Principal Martin nodded slowly. "Will you four do me a favor? Since you were the only ones I've spotted this hour."
The four of us exchanged glances again and nodded nervously.
"On Friday night," Principal Martin began, "I will be attending this reunion, and I want the four of you to stay in my house to take care of my children."
Darren forced a cough. "Can't you like, call a babysitter?"
Principal Martin ignored Darren's question and lifted his head. "I will expect the four of you to come by my house on Friday at seven. No exceptions. If one of you didn't come, it will be a week detention for all of you."
"What?" Amber shouted.
The middle-aged principal looked at Amber. "Is there a problem, Ms. Stonem?"
Amber shook her head nervously. "Uh, no, sir."
"Then it's settled. Friday night at seven." He walked away.
As Principal Martin walked away, we started complaining. It's totally unfair for the four of us to babysit. I mean, yeah, Darren has a point. Why won't he hire a babysitter? And I'm sure we weren't the only ones who ditched school today. It's completely unfair.
"That middle-aged freak," Darren said in disgust.
"Come on, guys," Jake said, trying to convince us. "It's just only for a couple of hours. I'd rather babysit than go to detention for a week."
Darren, Amber, and I nodded in agreement. Jake has a point. And my parents would take away the half of my allowance if they find out that I'm in detention. But this sucks a lot.
The four of us carried on back to our rooms. Jake slipped his hand into mine all the way back.
We stopped when we reached our room. Darren and Amber said their goodnights, hugged, and stuff that couples usually do when saying their goodbyes.
Jake handed me my duffel bag. He tucked a strand of my curly blond hair behind my ear.
"So..." he began.
"So..." I repeated.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
I nodded and smiled. "Yeah."
Jake kissed my cheek before I went inside my room.
"Uh, Avery?" he called before I closed the door.
I looked out at him. "Hmm?"
He smiled. "I love you.
I smiled back. "As I love you." Then he walked away, back to his room.
The next morning...
I woke up and did my usual morning routine. No ditching class this time. I had a good sleep.
