We are so focused on training that we don't even notice when the others arrive at the gym. I know I should feel tired due to the lack of sleep, but I don't. Cassandra elbows me. "Looks like we got caught."

I grin, and see that Eric's glaring at me. Again. "What are you doing here?" Matt crosses his arms, looking more imposing than ever. "We were training." I shrug, trying to seem nonchalant, but I'm sure everyone knows I'm nervous.

Is training at night against the rules? Am I going to be kicked out of Dauntless? Matt seems surprised, but quickly regains his composure. "That shows dedication. Well done."

He heads over to the center of the room, and I am suddenly glad I agreed to sneak out here yesterday. "Okay, initiates. Here's how I decided to pair you all up..." He reads down the list on the board behind him... I tune him out until I hear my name.

"Eric versus Matt." Cassandra's eyes widen, and I know she fears for my life. I would have too, a few days ago, but I am no longer afraid of Eric. I meet Eric in the center of the room, and try to remember everything Matt has taught me.

"The rules are simple. You will fight each other until one of you is unconscious. Got it?" He signals for us to start, not even waiting for our reply. I decide to let Eric make the first move. He tries to punch me, but I grab hold of his arm and twist it behind his back.

He howls in pain, and, for some reason, the sound is like music to my ears. He somehow manages to escape my grip and aims for my ribs. He knocks the wind out of me, and I fall to the floor. He then kicks me in the face, and everything goes black.
