"Thank you," Marcus says. There's not even a hint of grief on his face. He takes the food from the other Abnegation around him, offering them a small smile in return. I rarely see him like this. Kind and peaceful. Of course, he has to act this way, in public, since so many people look up to him.

Andrew Prior steps forward. "My condolences, Marcus. I know you must miss your wife terribly." I try not to laugh. Marcus probably can't wait to hit me, now that I have no one to protect me. Behind Andrew, his family is quiet, respectfully bowing their heads in a moment of silence.

"I'll be alright. After all, my son is still with me." Marcus places a hand on my shoulder, no doubt attempting to look like the caring father he never was. I struggle not to flinch.

"Of course. Tobias, we are so sorry for your loss." I can tell that Andrew is sincere, his eyes full of concern. His children step forward, each carrying a sack of food. Caleb gives me his - apples. Then his sister steps forward. Unlike the others, she actually looks at me.

I'm so surprised, I forget to take the gift she offers me. Marcus's tap on my shoulder brings me back to reality. "Thank you," I mumble. Marcus shoots me a look that I know means I've disappointed him. Again. I clear my throat and speak up. "Thank you, sir, for supporting us in this time of need." I give the required answer, bow my head, and shut up before Marcus gets mad at me.

"We'll miss your mother very much, dear." It's one of the few times I've heard Natalie Prior speak. Her voice is soothing, calm. Oh, how I wish I could leave Abnegation once and for all! I can't stand this meaningless small talk, Marcus's beatings, my daily punishments.

"We must get going. I have to prepare for today's meeting. I'll see you there, correct?" At Mr. Prior's nod, Marcus says, "Very well. Thank you all." I can't believe it. My mother, his wife, just died, and he can't be bothered to shed at least a single tear.

Marcus turns and hurries away. I have to jog to keep up with him. I look back one last time, and see that Beatrice Prior is staring at me.
