The next twenty minutes pass by in a blur. I only remember parts of it; Marcus hitting my back over and over with his belt like a slave driver, his sneering face looming over mine when I fell.

Speaking up for myself was the biggest mistake I'd ever made. "I haven't told anyone. But it's true. I hate you!" That comment resulted in my losing one tooth to Marcus's fists.

"You idiot. Do you really think I care about wether you like me or not? All that's important to me is my job as a town council member. And now your selfishness has put even that at risk. I'm ashamed to admit I'm related to you!"

That was as much as I could take. I now no longer cared about his fists or his belt. I let out all the anger I'd been holding back since the day I was born. "Do you think I asked to be part of your family? My mother is...was... the only one who ever cared about me. I wish you had died instead of her!"

Marcus's eyes widened, and I felt a surge of pride for having had the courage to stand up to him after all these years... But that good feeling didn't last for more than a minute, because the next thing I knew, Marcus's foot was coming down on my face at full speed.
