Chapter 36
It was another cool night. There were no clouds in the sky so we could see the many stars that twinkled on the indigo blanket above. The crescent moon reflected its light down onto the ground like a cat’s eye and a slight carpet of mist clung to the grass under our paws.
The pack had met up again on the school field and there was some talking going about. Many of them still didn’t know who I really was and I wasn’t planning on letting them know any time soon (there were a few girls who did but they had promised not to tell). However, Baz had said that it would be best if they did know before they started thinking he was cheating on me with some other female who no one trusted.
‘So who is your mysterious little toy, Barry?’ asked Alfie; at least I remembered someone.
‘I was just thinking of letting you all know. Thanks for mentioning it.’ Alfie bowed his head to Baz out of respect then wandered off. ‘Everyone!’ he barked to get their attentions. ‘As you all know my mate has been around for awhile and I know that some of you think I’m cheating on my girlfriend, Kerry with this beautiful wolf beside me.’ I turned my head in embarrassment but stayed quiet. ‘The truth is, is that Kerry knows I am with this she-wolf.’ A few of the females in the group gasped in disgust at the thought of this.
‘Don’t judge him like that!’ Charlie pepped up to my right. ‘It’s not quite what you think.’
‘Thanks, Beta.’ Charlie grumbled but said no more. ‘My girlfriend is here with us.’ They looked around and at each other with confused, bewildered expressions. ‘And she can explain to you herself, if she wishes.’ He turned around and nuzzled me as he whispered in my ear. ‘I want you to show them. It’s about time they knew, especially as you’re going to be their Alpha female and they need to be able to trust and accept you.’ I nodded, closed my eyes and changed for all their eyes to witness.
The shocked gasps that emanated through the rest of the pack were warming to my more dominant self; I soon changed back so I could hear anything they tried to say to or about me.
‘You sure that was the right decision?’ I asked Baz as I heard some of them saying things like ‘impossible’ and ‘ridiculous’.
He hugged me in our wolfish way. ‘Of course, it might take them a while to get used to this and if any of them ask just say it was fate or something elusive.’
That didn’t help at all, but I planned on sticking to his plan or whatever ideas he had formed in his big skull.
‘So, Kerry is a werewolf?’ The deep male voice came from behind us. Before I turned around, I watched how all of my pack stood up and growled lowly, their manes seemed to vibrate with their voices. And then I did turn around and was met with a scary sight.
Stood on the edge of the field, on the pavement, was the wolfish form of Cayleb; to each of his sides was the entire formation of his pack, or so it seemed. The only thing that seemed to be missing was his Alpha, which seemed stranger the more I thought about it. Looking sideways at Baz, I saw how he stood tall and stern in place, not even his tail twitched.
Barking for his pack to stay where they were, Cayleb trotted over to me much to my irritation. Baz walked in a stalk like manner until he stood behind me, I swished my tail for him to know I knew he was there.
‘What do you want, Cayleb? We are allowed to be here,’ I stated with certainty.
He sniffed at the air; I took in a small breath to discover what he smelt and thought it must have been my pack. ‘Yes, but tonight we have possession of the field and I suggest you and your pack vacate the premises.’
